Qustions about an Niehoff 100/40 amp 14/28 volt Alternator for a M35a2

I would like to install a Niehoff 40/100 amp 14/28 volt Alternator in my M35A2. I have tried to searched the forum for the part numbers for the alternator and pulley needed for the modification. I could not find the information.

If anyone could help, it would be most appreciated.

I'd like to do this as well. Dual alternator kits are cool, but the niehoff would be a cleaner install and leave more room to work on that side. Of course, with dual alts, you get 100 amps on both voltages.

I want a smaller setup and if you do the amp /voltage conversion 24 at a 100 amp is 200 amps at 12 volts. Really 100 amps 24 is big power. Then there is the 12 volt side at 40 amps. But what most people don't account for is if you have three optima's battery hooked together 2 for the 24 volt side and one linked for 12 volt you are going to get another 20 to 30 amp carryover from the 24 volt side. You really don't need 200 amps at 24 because that works out to bee 400 amps in 12 volts!! The parasitic load would be very high!! It would take like 20 hp to run the alternator!! The 200 amp alternator is a substation!! You could power a refrigerator or a good size air con!!

I have a 400watt 12volt amp amplifier for my stereo in my truck so I need the extra power on the 12 volt side. If I was running a basic stereo, I would just short cut it buy running a 24 volt to 12 volt 30amp converter to the third battery. That would be all that would be need it most cases of running a duel voltage system in a M35A2. Cheap and easy. Most run it with two batteries to the application. If you run three batteries, which will fit, you run the converter to the third battery. easy simple!!

On the mine site I work at in the bush in Mali we have to have lighting plants and generators for power. We have to make our own power here. We are off the grid. We just use a 140 amp alternator to light a site with the drill Rig. That is all you really need at most. If you are running led like I am, I don't even need that. We are not running a radar installation from our truck like the military!! lol
I not saying it is big. I am saying it is over kill for the application and your wasting hp's to go down the road and fuel!! The M35 is not a power house. I rather have 15 hp on the ground, not driving a genset!!

Rusty, the Prestolite on our trucks are actually 100 amp alts. This has been verified, not just hearsay.
Our you sure Garrett ? Mine says 24volt 60 amps. Now if it truly is a 100amp's that would be great ! but I am a little skeptical about that claim. Who said it any way ? and where is this information ? I would love to check it out.

Since we now know that we have 100 amps coming from our Alternator maybe the best way to go is a Battery Equalizer. What do think Rusty??

I'm not sold on the idea that all the alternators are 100 amp units. There is a 100 amp stator you could buy (which I did ) for this alternator. By just installing the stator you would have a 100 amp unit. The problem is there is three different models of alternators used and I have the wrong one for this modification. Maybe this test alternator was modified.

M35a2 Alternators

I looked at every Alternator that has been on an M35A2 since 1974 and all of the technical specs from the original manufacture's and found that there civilian rating was 80-90 amp. The 1974 parts manual has it listed a 30-80 amp alternator. So that being said they make more than 60 amp's but not 100 amps. look at TM 9-2920-225-34 for more details. The manufacture's part numbers are on the cover page.
