Longer speedometer cable

Has anyone had any experience using a HMMWV speedometer cable in a CUCV? My stock cable is so short the cluster must be in place first and then I have to snake my hand up behind the dash to connect it to the back of the gauge. A real pain. If the cable was a little longer it could be attached before the cluster was seated and secured.

I was looking at a HMMWV speedometer cable and it looks like the ends are the same. In addition the HMMWV cable is about 3 feet longer, the excess which could simply stay under the truck. I'm interested to know if anyone has tried this before.

That is the way the speedo cables are on most older GM vehicles. You seat the cluster and reach up and it snaps right into place. If you thread/snap it onto the cluster with it away you would be pushing on the speedo head and that is held in place by a tin face and small screws. That would cause an issue with breaking things. These inner cluster housings are as fragile as potato chips at this stage. The HMMWV cable is threaded I believe. I will look. But the HMMWV cable would be shorter I believe also. Since you have the heads at your knees in one of them. Good Luck.

I don't remember what years but some suburbans came with a short "auxiliary" cable that was about 18" long and just screwed onto the OEM cable under the truck. I used one to extend the cable on one of my trucks.

I have to snake my hand up behind the dash to connect it to the back of the gauge. A real pain.

I take mine off and then put it back on like this every year to lube the cable, pretty easy actually. Lie down on the floor, its quite accessible. Its really simple to snap it in, some find it hard to remove with one hand as you have to push the tab to release the cable. It is easier with 2 hands for some.

I need to consider this as well. When I install the torque splitter, everything will move back 7 1/2 inches.
