I recently picked up this 71 Kaiser, and it has the type of transfer case that I'm told is supposed to engage the front axle automatically when slippage is detected. I'm told that these were apparently very troublesome, the adjustment procedure is a nightmare, and most never worked well, if at all. This is all just what I've heard. If I'm wrong I'll have a chicken dinner. I have no experience with either type. The guy we got the truck from did disclose to us that the front axle was in fact not engaging and that the transfer case would need to be replaced.
One of the conditions of the sale was his including what he said was a "brand new and never used "air shift" transfer case. I don't know anything much about the differences between the two except to say that the one he included was apparently stored outside under a tarp for many years. So whether it is in fact "brand new" or not it's really rusty. In fact it might be safe to say that it looks like it might have been salvaged from the Andrea Doria.
So without really knowing the condition of the spare that we received, and not knowing if this is a simple one for one swap I'm a bit hesitant to rip the old one out and replace it with a questionable one. My questions are: are these interchangeable? How difficult would a swap be and what ese would I need to do this? Just how unreliable is the transfer case I presently have in the truck? Is it salvageable and can it be adjusted or repaired to the point where it will be reliable? Thanks, Lenny
