I have the Fermont built MEP-802A. The military set it up , ran it 7.8 hrs and drained it for storage , so I'm now ready to fuel it up . MIL-L-2104C, OE HDO-30.

What is the best oil for it ?

Howdy,
A good grade 15W-40 diesel oil.

You can use Petroleum quality institute of America information and make your own decision with oil too.

MEP-802A = ONAN DN2M-1 = Lister-Petter LPW2
(WIX and Napa Gold filters are the same filter minus the first number)
Fuel Filter Cartridge WIX 33348 (Napa 3348 )
Fuel Filter Canister WIX 33472 (Napa 3472)
Oil Filter WIX 51374 (Napa 1374)
Belt Goodyear 4040355

I use John Deere Plus-50 II 15W-40 Engine Oil here.

X2 on the Rotella -- I use "organic" oil.... Don't know that's any better than synthetic, but organic oil is good enough for the Cummins in the truck....

Is it the risella x2 you are using? I just went and looked on shells Web site because i use she'll products where I can and never heard of the oil or have I seen it. Where do you buy it and how do you like it?

I'm using Rotella 15w40 as well. Good, cheap, and readily available. Keep in mind these sets were designed to run on mil-spec SAE 30 oil from slightly after the dinosaurs it's made from died out. Nearly anything you can buy today of the right viscosity range is better oil than that, as long as it is rated CD or higher.

I've run Delo 400 for years in our gens & tractors at our ranch. (we buy it by the drum there at the local Chevron bulk plant). I usually use Mobil or Shell here at home for my Gen & M923a2 & M925a2 as I pick it up when it's on sale in the 5 gallon buckets.

No one uses Delo 400 15-40?
I run the Delo 400 15-40 full synthetic. In fact I just bought a gallon today ! When ever it goes on sell I buy some. I also use the Rotella synthetic. Which ever is on sell at the time gets used . I use full synthetic since I don't want to be replacing oil ever month. This way I only replace it when the hour meter says so. I've found out over the years the synthetic oil will not absorb the moisture like the organic oils do. So for engines that sit for long periods of time (like our generators) it is better to use the synthetic.

Slight edit as I contradicted myself ;) My father flew century series jets with AL and has been a Amsoil dealer since 1978 So we use it in everything except we both still use Dyno oil in stuff that sits around with non-use as we change it every other year regardless of hours and also because Dyno oil is more kind to seals and gaskets when in long term storage. Don't get me wrong, Amsoil gave our old 1988 Hyundai's (remember those) engine a 300K mile life and my 10,000 RPM toys are all still going strong. As for Dyno oil- For kicks I used cheap Wal-Mart oil in my cummins, added 1 quart of lucas and drove it 5,000 mile before sending a sample to blackstone. You guessed it, oil is still good- thick due to lucas.

I believe that engine is going to be in the flat tappet category. So, the zinc level of the oil will come into play for longevity of the cam. A favorite topic of rustystud.

Delo® 400 LE SAE 15W-40 Exposes the Semi-Synthetic Myth
-- Chevron’s Flagship Heavy-Duty Diesel Motor Oil Provides Equal or Better Protection Versus Major Oil Company Semi-Synthetics in Industry Recognized Bench Tests --

SAN RAMON, CALIF.,February 10, 2011*– Chevron Lubricants, maker of the Delo® brand of technologically advanced engine oils, lubricants and coolants,*today*announced that it recently conducted benchmark testing to determine how its premium conventional heavy-duty motor oil, Delo 400 LE SAE 15W-40, performed against major oil companies semi-synthetics. Test results showed that Delo 400 LE with ISOSYN® Technology was equal to, if not better than, leading semi-synthetics in industry recognized tests in the areas of wear control, oxidation and deposit control.

"Most heavy-duty semi-synthetics are touted as having superior performance over conventional oils, but that's largely a marketing effort to persuade customers that the addition of synthetic base oil to an engine oil formulation will deliver a higher level of protection to critical components, thus justifying the extra price," said Len Badal, Commercial Sector Manager, Chevron Lubricants. "The notion that a semi-synthetic or synthetic blend provides significant benefits over a product like our Delo 400 LE 15W-40 is a myth. This misperception, coupled with a fleet's desire to extend drain intervals, has resulted in many fleets switching to semi-synthetics without fully researching the facts. Based on our research and general information provided by several large heavy-duty OEMs, the performance benefits of semi-synthetics versus premium formulated heavy duty engine oils are marginal at best, and typically don't justify the additional price a customer must pay for them."

Through bench testing, Chevron documented examples of the competitive semi-synthetic performance myths in multiple areas versus its premium formulated Delo 400 LE 15W-40. In these tests, the Delo 400 LE with ISOSYN® Technology performed equal to or better than many leading semi-synthetics. In one test designed to look at soot related wear protection, Delo 400 LE significantly outperformed 3 of the 4 semi-synthetics tested, showing between 16-41% better wear protection in this test. Tests for oxidation and deposit control also showed very good performance results of Delo 400 LE versus the four major oil companies' semi-synthetic products.

Because Chevron acknowledges that bench tests by themselves are not always an indicator of performance in the field, the company also conducted extended drain field tests. In these tests, Delo 400 LE 15W-40 showed that it can provide superb extended drain protection and performance – an area the semi-synthetics tout as their strength. In recent over-the-road field tests using 12 Detroit Diesel 15 (DD15) engines, Delo 400 LE 15W-40 with ISOSYN® Technology was able to extend drains out to 70,000 miles for the customer without filter changes. In this testing, both wear protection and oxidation control were validated from the Delo bench tests.

Following the test, one of the DD15 engines was torn down and inspected. Even at 70,000 mile oil drains, inspection of the engine at 400,000 miles of service life indicated excellent engine durability—with low wear, low deposits and clean engine – impressing the customer and the OEM dealer that performed the engine teardown.

While Chevron recommends customers adhere to OEM specifications based on their situation, this field test is further proof the extra protection sought by customers can be obtained in a premium heavy-duty engine oil – like Delo 400 LE 15W-40.

Badal continued, "We're concerned that some fleets are unnecessarily purchasing semi-synthetic engine oils without understanding if there are any real benefits. They need to determine what they are getting for the premium price. Customers may be very surprised at the answer."

The strong performance of Delo 400 LE 15W-40 is a result of Chevron's proprietary ISOSYN® Technology which combines premium base oils with advanced additives to create optimal products that rival synthetic performance at an excellent value.

Yes it is :D ! That's why even with the synthetic oil I still use a "Zinc" additive in every oil change. People may laugh at my measures but I have engines, big and small (yard tractor for one) that are over 30 years old still going strong.

VW PD TDI diesels eat cam's due to lack of zinc, with your genset firing up at 10F cold plus with these engines racing up to 1800RPM doesn't help either, if It were mine Id use Mobile one Turbo diesel truck Synthetic 5w40 with a Zinc additive.
