Compressor Replacement Video

yes, I've downloaded the manuals and searched.

I'm having to replace the air compressor tomorrow. I know it's not a terrible job from what most people are saying, but I'm curious if anyone has videos, or advice on it prior to tearing the truck apart.

If it is a NHC250 the lower back bolt is a bear!!!!

If it's a C series, make sure you loctite and torque the compressor support capscrews into the block, support block AND the compressor or you will crack the gear housing if they come loose. A fun job, for me!

And, if it's an 855, it's easier/faster to remove the complete accessory drive/comp/fuel pump as an assembly and do the components on the bench. just make sure the timing is set when you go back together.

Now, this line was unfortunately smashed, and didn't notice it was twisting until it was too late.

Question: As finding the correct ends seems impossible local (even tried the local semi service center), is it possible to run a different line here and reuse the ends? Or, does it have to be the same material?

Seems to be just copper tubing. Find the right size and reflare the ends and reuse the fittings. Should be pretty easy and inexpensive.

Yeah, just seemed like standard copper tubing, but no one has the right size. Is there any reason to stay with copper, or can I go with a flexible line?

You can go to a Parker store, there are two there in Denver. They have those in crimp on and they have air hose good up to 450 degrees and 300psi and just replace it with that. Only issue is nothing is going to be open until Tuesday.

Also surprised Lowe's or Home Depot didn't have the copper tubing that size just in a 5ft length.

Nice. Thanks for the suggestion. That's actually one of the places the guy at the truckstop suggested.

Beyond that, any suggestions in the meantime? Or, do I accept defeat until Tuesday?

Line off the bottom or back of the compressor? I don't have any A2s laying around at the moment. You would think Rocky Mountain Cummins would have it since they are open till 8? or so. I know Cummins here is open till 8 on Sundays for parts and repair. a pic of it and the compressor may lead me to a part number and I can check their warehouses locally around you. but push come to shove it'd be Tuesday. Some truck repair shops will make their own hydraulic hoses but they don't have a number of fittings.

It comes off the top of the compressor, towards the front. RMC was closed when I called a bit after 5. First picture is obviously compressor (it connects on the top line, second picture where it connects on the frame.

It isn't a Cummins part, it is what the OEM uses as the discharge line. Measure the line and go to your local industrial hose outlet and they can make it for you out of DOT air comp discharge braided stainless with the ends you need.

Also, what parts/lines should I loctite? I'm assuming the red residue on the bolts that were removed were done with loctite. Just wanting to avoid getting loctite into a brand new part and doing damage.

The studs into the gear housing are coated with a locking agent from Cummins. No other locking agent is needed on the compressor mounting EXCEPT for the hardware that mounts the two rear, bottom support pieces, 6 capscrews in total, two into the bottom of the comp from the flat plate, two from the flat plate to the thick block of steel and two through the block of steel into the engine block. I'll see if I can find a pic. all of the capscrews MUST be torqued. The that the power steering pump makes is what causes the mounting and support capscrews loosen.

I'll add loctite to those when I mount. Do you have torque specs on those ones?
