Does anybody know of a civilian part number for a starter that will fit the Cat 3116 in my '97 LMTV? My starter broke, and I need a replacement.

Thanks!

There are 2 versions one with thermal protection and the later model without. I think the me model is without. There are a few different cross refs though. It's not an uncommon starter but does fall under the Cat parts category which seems to make it more expensive than most starters.

So the non-ME version would be the same part number without the ME on the end? M0017703

Ok, I'll start looking for one. Just out of curiosity, why would you not want the thermal protection? Obviously they upgraded to one without it, but any idea why?

Would go into heat protection when it really should not have or at bad timing or the thermal protection would just go bad. It just lifts a ground from the aux start solenoid on the frame rail near the starter and can be bypassed with a wire.

Looking at starters I have found two part numbers M0017703ME and M0017705ME. It looks like the 03 is one with the thermal protection. The 05 is one without the thermal protection. I believe the only actual difference between the two is the 03 has 2 different parts, the brush holder has a thermal switch and the end housing has a connector for the thermal switch. I believe they are 100% interchangeable and if the P81 connector removal mod listed in the TM had been done then the thermal switch is not in play and will do nothing. The only other difference I see is the 03 is painted and the 05 is e-coated.

With the P81 connector removal mod it makes no difference what one you use.

It seems that new 03 can be had cheaper than the 05

At least this is my thinking and I have an 03 on its way. YMMV

Here is some info

You can interchange the thermal protected starter with the non-thermal. If you are replacing the thermal one with a non you need to wire out the switch that isn't there.

WOW! Thanks for those links Sir, that's the kind of stuff that guys who like to do EVERYTHING themselves need! I really dislike paying someone to put new brushes or gear drive in a starter because I can't find the part numbers! :shrugs:

No problem... it's what I do. I try to do most of my own work down to rebuilding a starter. The only thing is I found a nos 03 starter for 189.99 shipped. I can't buy parts for that price.
