New to me m59 dump truck...

I've been reviewing your m108 thread quite a bit as I was thinking about the engine swap. Right now I've run both the fuel and air compressor lines from the multifuel down the frame in the typical routes for an m35a2 and ending up behind the rear crossmember for the transfer case (which is nice and clear of obstructions on the m59). If I can't find an m275a2 fuel tank I plan on running one of the inline airtex fuel pumps and adapting the tank to make it work. If I can find the new tank I'll have to route the lines a little differently to get them to the pump since I believe it's under the cab.

The tank on the truck now is holding fuel but I'm not too sure the condition inside. It's been sitting half full of gas for who knows how long.
Hndrsonj found several tanks a few years back. I bought one for my M59 project that I ended up selling to him. He may know if there are any floating around.

Now that winter has arrived the dump truck work has slowed almost to a stop. Before it got too cold I painted the back of a winch and started bolting that on. I've got all the other parts needed to run it, I'll just need to find a decent front bumper at some point.

Floridianson was very nice to send me the two pins needed to reconnect the hoist to the bed, these are the same as the ones on 5 ton dump trucks.

Also, a couple weeks back I took a chance and bought an m275a2 tractor at auction based on the fact the passenger quarter fender looked decent and I needed one for the dump truck. This was the only picture in the listing:

It was dropped off tonight. Lucky for me all the tractor specific stuff is basically there. The passenger quarter fender is nice, and the multifuel style fuel tank is excellent on the exterior but was missing the cap and half full of nasty diesel/water. Hopefully it will be alright. I'll have to look the truck over in the light tomorrow but I'm thinking I'll take the fenders and tank for the dump truck. I'd hate to cut it up to the point it couldn't be saved because with some parts from an m35a2 it would make a nice m275a2.

The m275a2 donor truck is now all apart. The quarter fenders are exactly the same, and the holes are already there to fit either tractor or dump truck brackets. They're also the same left side and right side. We also drained and removed the a2 fuel tank from the tractor. It was half full of a mixture of junk that looks a bit like tomato soup but the tank itself doesn't look too bad. I'll also be able to use the fuel feed and return lines which should make things easier.

It looks like if I'm able to find a 2.5 ton cab protector then I'll have a pretty complete truck.:D

Yep, I've got a wanted ad in the classifieds for either. :grin: It also looks like an m342 cab protector would bolt on pretty easily, it's a different style but I'd live with it.
According to the pictures in the TMs it looks like the m215 cab protector might be slightly taller than the m59, I know the cabs on my m135s have a lot more head room than the m44 series.

Since you've owned one of these trucks, do you think the cab protector would be easy enough to replicate with some dimensions or templates?

The part number on the M59 and M215 are the same, so the protector should be the same. I think it would be relatively easy to make one. You just need to find one to replicate. I would call all the big dealers to see if they happened to have a parts truck. If you want I can run over to Jeff's and try to get you dimensions. Since it's currently -18 degrees, it might be awhile though....

Thanks. I pretty sure there's still a complete m59 a couple hundred miles away from me that I could look at it person. If one of you guys would be able to just post some close up shots of the cab protector to show how it's constructed that would be a big help. I'm in absolutely no rush! I probably won't think about looking at that part of this project until the snow is gone. Another piece I could use pictures of would be the lower mounting bracket for the passenger side quarter fender as I'll need to build one of those too.

The tractor probably won't end up leaving the yard under it's own power, it's pretty much all apart now. Since all the sheet metal needed to be replaced we removed it all as well as the engine/transmission. The front axle was sold to help offset the cost of it. While it could be put back together with the help of a donor truck and then finding a fuel tank and quarter fenders, I just don't have the time or cash to do it (and it probably wouldn't pay to do it either). Hopefully someone out there needs the tractor pieces for a restoration, or is looking for a big project.;-)

The a frame on the pipeline truck has been great to use. Even though it's not the most precise the simplicity of only having a winch and a couple snatch blocks to run things is awesome.

If I remember right the exhaust was pretty rotten and only good for a pattern. I do think I've got one of the rearmost pipes in good shape, maybe a couple. The motor is seized up and had some kind of problems but if any parts would be of use to you I'd sell them as I'm not going to need them.

Nice truck! One thing I could use from you would be a good quality scan of your data tag so I could try to get one made for my truck, as mine is completely missing. Your truck is the perfect one as yours is not only a REO, but also a factory winch truck whereas all the other m59s I know of are non winch Studebakers.

Using the information off Mackafd's original data tag I made a decent digital copy of what I think my data tag looked like. I started with a scan of an m35a2 tag I had and edited all the info to match the m59. My serial number is 1307xx so from other trucks I've seen that would make it a 1954.

glad I could help. if you need any more info let me know. also reading up on your fuel tank. mine was rusty inside and needed repair. so what we did was cut the end off one end and inserted a aluminum tank inside ( long round tank) and then tacked the end of the old tank back on. you would never know unless you opend the fill cap and saw a smaller cap inside.

I've got the tractor tank all washed out, it's actually pretty clean inside. I changed out the in-tank pump for a known good one and replaced the sending unit so it should be set to install in the truck whenever I get around to it. The long tanks for the short wheelbase trucks are an inch shorter than an m35a2 tank so I just had to adjust the pump and sending unit a bit to fit. The gasser tanks have the 1" raised section for the sender so a typical one works for those.

I could use a couple pictures of the mounting brackets for the passenger side quarter fender when you get a chance, no rush at all. I've got the driver's side brackets but I'll have to fabricate the passenger ones.
I'm also going to have to bend up the long hook bolts that clamp the 2 halves of the spare tire holder together, but that should be easy as it's just 1/2" round with a bend on one end. I was able to find all the specs for them online.

Except that it should have a picture of a dump not a cargo.
