M101A2 shock replacement

Installed new brakes on my other M101A2 yesterday.

While underneath bleeding brakes, I noticed one of the shocks has forklift damage.

Ive read the old threads on replacement part numbers and it seems the NAPA #NS 76992 is the only true direct fit gas shock replacement shock.
Anyone have luck with this shock?

Im not cutting off and welding new eyes on or using a hole saw to make the bushing fit like others have done.

Monroe is the original shock manufacturer for these trailers according to some threads, but the above NAPA number does not cross reference to Monroe.

Monroe 32283 was also referenced to work in the old threads

What is everyone else using?

98% of all shocks made today are gas charged. Oil fluid filled hydraulic dampening went obsolete & to the Smithsonian.

32283 is gas product. Exact bushings and fit with correct stroke. O"Reilly can order in a day. I have put these on over 10 trailers with no issues.

Napa Gas Grande 76992 is a private label monroe made for NAPA. Bigger and beefier upgrade and more $ of course

Yes, All the m101 a1-3 use the same set up.

Do you have a pic of the Monroe 32283 next to a shock you took off a trailer?

No, I do not. I typically sell off the used ones for $5 to folks with forklift bent who need a quick cheap fix for one.

Are the Monroe 32283's the same size physically as the originals?
Is the NAPA shock bigger than original?
Side by side pic would be great.

I want a replacement shock as close to original performance as possible, not just cheaper.
Local stores have to order so no bringing old shock in to compare.

I didn't get any side by side pics, by they are basically the same size, they might have just a bit more travel than the originals.

Yes the monroe are the same OE diameter. The napa gas grande are considerably wider.

Installed new shocks on tan trailer today.


1) Forklift damage.
2) Original shocks and longer travel Monroe 32283's, both fully extended.
The original ones were completely worn out. Zero resistance.
Trailer was riding on the springs basically.

Painted the new shocks flat flat black after pic was taken.
Couldnt handle the blue.


Numbers on the original shocks.
Haven't looked them up yet.



Painted and installed.
This trailer is a work trailer so no new paint.

Night and day on the ride!
Rides like a new trailer now.

OD trailers next.

Yes, good shocks make a difference on these trailers. I have tried a few aftermarket and like the Rancho RS5226 the best.

What is it about the Rancho shock that you like besides the brand?
What did the other shocks not do?

I believe that you usually get what you pay for.

The rs are a bigger bore shock than stock and also big $.

Rancho is a subsidiary of Monroe. Their claim to fame is the 4x4 off road market and having shocks with the longer stroke for trucks that have been lifted where the oe shock will not mount due to the lift.

I had mine loaded to the top of the wooden rails hauling off the remnants of a shed I tore down. 2 heavy loads. The trailer rode great with the new Monroe shocks. Zero complaints here.

It was mostly the brand and published specs. Back when I was looking, I was tired of calling around getting questions about what vehicle the shock was off of. If they were not posted online, no one seemed interested in looking through the specs to find what I wanted.

I came across the Rancho RS5226 because Rancho was thoughtful enough to list their entire line of shocks in a pdf. (link below). I was able to browse the nicely organized specs and identify candidates that would fit. Once I found what I wanted, ordered from Amazon. Was $100 for the pair so I guess they are double the price of the Monroe 32283. They do have a "cool factor" when people look under the trailer. Price didn't seem bad based on my previous limited shock purchases for vehicles. I wanted to support the company that cared enough to make the specs for their products accessible and do think the $50 is worth the looks/comments from people when they look under the trailer. I didnt notice the ram was larger, but that cant hurt.

I did try a set of monroe coil over gas shocks that were even more expensive. Unloaded ride sufferer but they seem to handle heavy loads better.

I am sure the Monroe 32283 are fine as well and had them listed in my notes, I just passed on them because I was looking for something different.
