You should disconnect the batteries to do anything electrical.

If you disconnect the ground wire it will help keep the magic smoke in the wires - Once you let that smoke out of the wires nothing ever seems to work the same...

I used to have an ACDelco part number for replacement magic smoke, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Gotta be real careful since you can't seem to replace that stuff anymore.
