I bought a 1998 Plan B M998 yesterday

It was my understanding that it was a requirement. But if you didn't have it as original equipment you could make it switch operated. I may have read the requirement wrong because I knew I was going to put them on anyway.

Personally, I'd highly recommend doing it even if not required by code. Especially with tinted windows. It's a good safety feature AND it helps to communicate with other drivers.

I doubled up on the utility and made them rear facing work lights as well, operated by the switch.

On the down side... I leave mine on accidentally all the time while driving around.

Yup, I'm sure I would too. When I put mine on I think I'll suck it up and by the reverse switch to mount on the gear selector lever.

I put bullet LED's in, switch operated...pretty bright but I don't know about the durability. The inside of the light sticks out an inch or so into the wheel well and gravel roads will ultimately damage them but we'll see how they hold up.

After posting some info on the HMMWV Owners facebook group regarding the few small problems I had (bad batteries, no wipers, bad washer pump) I was proactively contacted by one of Plan B's mechanics. He took my info and passed it to the owners. One of the owners (Tom) called me today to address the issues. He is sending me a set of wiper arms/blades, he is reimbursing me for the cost of the batteries I had to put in it, and he's paying for a new windshield washer pump.

Keeping in mind that I didn't buy the truck from Plan B and technically I should have addressed at least the battery issue with GP because it was advertised as "starts and runs", which was NOT what I received I think this was a very stand up thing for them to do given that the total of the parts and compensation is over $400. I felt it was only fair after bringing these problems to light in a public form to let people know that Plan B stood behind their product.

If you're reading this Tom (or Cory), thanks so much for taking care of me!

The fact they painted everything is pure laziness. No prep. Straight hacked is my opinion. Or bubba-butchered. The fact they pulled the batteries and didn't clean out the battery tray. They litterly bought a 5-10k truck on gp, put a top kit on it, surplused tires, painted the sucker and sold it. The fact it still has an off-road stimulation on the current owner.

I'm always amazed how someone choosing to enter the MV hobby can be taken as negative. We've each made our choices with our dollars and bought vehicles that were good deals and some that were not. How one chooses to enter the hobby is his own decision. I'm glad the OP chose a Plan-B HMMWV. There are many good things that can come from this experience for him and us alike.

1. We receive intel on an actual unit instead of hearsay or seeing one at a show.
2. The new owner gets into the MV hobby (most important) and shares with his acquaintances
3. Remember Plan-B is an AMERICAN SMALL BUSINESS. We should support them even if beyond our price tag or comfort level.

Let's face it, part of the animosity towards Plan-B is that we've all had similar thoughts and not been able to fulfill it to that scale. Maybe they aren't the most "correct" renditions of MV when it comes to parts and refurbishing... But, read their mission statement. They are NOT a MV restoration business. They are in the "Preparedness" market. They want to get the capabilities found in MV's out to the masses. Again, their mission and vision may not be yours, but you have to respect it. We are all in the hobby for similar reasons. I'm sure the OP will enjoy learning about his truck just as we have. Don' be offended if his budget for accomplishing this is different than yours.

I, for one, am happy for the OP that he obtained a vehicle he wanted. We all realize there will be some repairs and upgrades required on older vehicles that have been put through their paces. I am looking forward to additional information and photos being posted in this thread by the OP (remember the intel part?). Don't mess it up by being negative. I'm sure he'll take you for a ride if you ask nice!

I dont mean any negativity towards the OP with his purchase, but I dont respect plan B supply because they go through great lengths to not disclose to buyers that they get the trucks off of govplanet with the same off road stipulations and they just work their way around "off road only". Everyone here worked around it including me, but the fact that they are not open with it to a customer buying a $30k rig isent right. Watch some of their youtube vids and see what i mean. or read their advertisement http://www.planbsupply.com/hummers-h1-humvees-hmmwv-for-sale I contacted them awhile back inquiring about their trucks one of my questions was where they get em from and they said "the military" I asked if they get them from GP and the gentleman says "we have our sources for these trucks" not to mention painting over their lack of work under the hood.

My call to them before I bought this truck was very different and I received a bit more insight into their process. I also understand that because they are sourcing trucks from the same places that GP is auctioning from, they are subject to the same potential risk of buying a truck that starts and runs but ends up costing them a crap load of money when they get it back to their facility for tear down and inspection. I'm not defending them to you, but I think once you consider the entirety of their business model, what I paid for what I got was a fair deal. And I'll be honest the Utah title had serious value to me because of the horror stories I've heard about the DMV here in VA. With a UT title I was able to walk out of my local DMV in under an hour with a fresh, unrestricted on road title. No way I would have done that with an SF97 and I was willing to factor that in to the cost. That along with NEW tires, XD wheels, Rhino lined interior, bed and underbody, the paint job, the aftermarket door/top/rear and the fact that somebody knowledgeable went through the truck before I got it all adds up.

If you think I got ripped off, well, I guess we can both be glad it wasn't your $29k.

And for what its worth, I don't take your post as negativity towards me and likewise mine is not towards you. I can respect your point of view.

Also, to reiterate: what matters is if YOU are happy with the truck. If you think you made the right choice for you, you can tell everyone else to pound sand.

Been following this thread since kcobean started it since I was curious about the Plan B trucks though I have zero intention of buying one but, I agree with Action.

Doing that is shoddy and speaks of poor workmanship and/or laziness. I couldn't imagine doing my job to quality like that. That combined with the fact they couldn't go to the time or trouble to at least stick decent batteries like Odysseys in there, let alone clean out the battery compartment, or even make sure it has something as basic as wiper arms. It just smacks of either horrible QC or desire to make a fast buck off of people who may not be mechanically inclined (not saying kcobean falls into this category) and are looking for a turnkey solution. Clearly not a turnkey truck when it can't even be driven off the transporter...

It's disappointing to see a company do stuff like that when there aren't a ton of options available but, it was good to see them step up to the plate and address the issues even if they shouldn't have been there in the first place. Maybe it was a one off truck that slipped through the cracks but, I doubt that.

I really want to know what other stuff was left untouched. If I were you kcobean, I'd be looking at belts, fluids, and hoses thoroughly.

At the end of the day though, as TNriverjet said, if the buyer is happy that's all that really matters and kcobean does seem to be! I just know if I were looking for a turnkey truck, I'd probably look elsewhere.

Congrats on the humvee. I would love to hear about the hardtop kit fit and finish etc. I'm in the process of converting my 4 man soft top to a hard top. One of the questions I have is how is the rear window seals and the fit/finish?

The top is nice. I'm "iffy" on the doors because a) the windows are small and b) the latching hardware is kinda cheap. The rear "curtain" is nice and the window seems to seal well.
