New to me -1990 M998 (AM General Pickup) - now time to deal with Maryland MVA

I just recently purchased a 1990 M998 with a clear Virginia title. Vehicle is listed as a 1990 AM General Pickup. I suppose that is how I would have to register the M998 in Maryland. Do you foresee any additional issues that I could run into going through the local MVA or should I go through a 3rd party Titling Service in MD? If the 3rd party service is suggested, please make your suggestions on who I should go and pay a visit to.

If you have a clear (unrestricted) title, you will be fine in MD. The only thing that throws the counter folks is if the 6 digit number matches something already registered. If that happens, wait a day and try going to a different branch. Also, as a 1990 you can apply for historic registration and walk out with tags that day.

Another member on here...I'll let him chime in if he wants...HAD trouble with a branch office. But, he was eventually able to get it squared away. I don't know the details, but I believe he said it had to do with the off-road only issue.

In my case there was an ancient trailer with the same number. Pointed out at a smaller branch. Waited a week, went to the main branch in Glen Burnie, prepared to move it up the chain of command. Went to the counter, had zero issues and walked out with tags 10 minutes later. They never even mentioned the trailer.

Did you get a copy of the original sd97 from the seller? It is always a good idea to keep a paper trail.

I went through a local tag and title place who took the paperwork up to Glen Burnie on a Thursday, turned it in and got it back to me the following Tuesday. Had a clear Montana title (no SF97), no inspection was required (25 years or more IIRC, maybe 20 is the cutoff).

I'd already called and spoken with "a specialist" who filled me in on the historic tag pluses and minuses (I don't drive it daily, it's a plus for ME not to have to pay the regular road use plate charges), how easy it was and it all confirmed what I'd read on the MVA website regarding FMVs/historic vehicles.

I hate waiting in the MVA, much less the VA.

We all have our "bete noirs."

Good luck on the insurance front. I went with Hagerty (after USAA and GEICO dropped FMV coverage), then found out about State Farm covers 'em (at least in Virginia). PM me I'll pass along a contact name/number.

A copy of that piece of paper should be very handy if it does not have the offroad only stamp.

Went to a local Tag and Title shop, to get it tagged and titled. Walked in, Walked out with Historic tags in hand. I had a clear Virginia title. Virginia took the SF-97 when it was titled as an AM General Pickup. I was able to get insurance through American Collectors Insurance.

Yes, when you do get your paperwork, make sure you make and keep copies of everything prior to handing your originals to anyone. I have electronic and paper copies of all my HMMWV-related docs. Due to one local horror story I had heard of a BMV (what they're called here in Indiana) attempting to confiscate someone's title paperwork "because it must be fake!", I actually did all of the talking with full color photocopies on the counter...they had no idea until right when everything was being approved and I could see that things were going well and I stopped them and handed them the actual copies. They naturally were mad (though they hadn't actually stamped or truly processed anything at that point...), but I just played dumb and said that I remembered that I accidentally had mixed them up and they got right on to actually processing everything through. Gave me some peace-of-mind, should I have encountered another street judge at the BMV.
