Humvee Steering Issue

Hello Humvee owners,

I am having issues with my steering. Humvee turns perfectly to the right but when I turn left I am
getting a much less turning radius.

Anyone know what this could be. I checked the fluid and its fine.

Have you checked the steering gear? Any loose parts possibly hitting the wheel?

Have you checked the U-joint in the steering shaft to see if it’s hitting the body anywhere?

see if the steering stop is hitting when you turn to the left. It is a bolt (in the hub) that will hit the lower control arm.

There always the possibility that the Pittman arm was changed steering was not properly aligned.

Check to see if the Tie-rods end clamp is rotated wrong. It not pointing towards hub it can bind up on the rim and grind and sequel when rolling. I don't think it would stop your turning radius ???? Something to check. You rebuilt it ? Did you change idler arm?

On page 836 and 837 of TM 9-2320-280-20-2. Also page 851 the top pic shows the orientation of the clamps I suspect also this is the culprit in the CAUTION warning: I tried posting the illustration but it comes out to small for some reason.

8-10. FRONT WHEEL TOE-IN ALIGNMENT (Cont’d)
c. Toe-in Adjustment
1. Loosen two locknuts (3) from clamps (1) on each adjusting sleeve (2).
NOTE
Toe-in can be increased or decreased by changing length of tie
rods. A threaded sleeve is provided for this purpose. Both tie
rods must be the same length ± 1/8 inch (3 mm) after
adjustment.
2. Turn each adjusting sleeve (2) equally but in opposite directions.
3. Roll vehicle rearward then forward to original position.
4. Repeat toe-in check and adjustment procedures until correct adjustment is indicated.
CAUTION
Ensure bolt and nut on adjusting sleeve clamp nearest to geared
hub is facing halfshaft. Bolt and nut on adjusting sleeve clamp
nearest to frame must be facing away (180°) from stabilizer bar,
to prevent damage to equipment.
5. Secure two clamps
30 lb-f-t (40 N·m).

You owe me way more than one beer. I spent 3/4 of an hour trying to convert the PDF to a JPG, finally just printed out the page, then copied it to a file....... What a nightmare. Anyway look at the two clamps and their orientation in this illustration. Number two in the top illistration, both clamps need to be oriented properly.

I do feel a bit of grinding. I did not rebuild or change any of the steering. I did change rims and tires to 22x10 with 37.5x13.5x22 Tires. It ran and turned fine and after a month this
issue began.

Don't know what you have for rims. BUT if not the proper spacing with spindle to rim offset this could be an huge issue. Don't think AMG / Hummwv's were designed with a lot of wheel flexibility options. Check with Manny, Moe & Jack for what works.

Hey guys I have a M1114 6.5 4speed turbo. I’m having issues with the power steering not working correctly when sitting still I can not turn the wheel whatsoever once I get moving it works fine.

I’ve changed out the Hydro booster like recommended in another forum and still having the same issue.

Do you believe putting used tires on the HMMWV may cause for it to act like it has no power steering? IMG_4252.jpeg

Just an observation in passing...
The power steering pump may be worn out from pushing those fat tires around.

So, the pump worked before you put on the new tires?
I’m pretty sure. There are others who are running the same set up and have no issues. The tires were bought used so I’m not sure if that’s playing a part in it. The power steering works when you give it gas which is building the pressure needed.
