in a not perfect world to balance out the high speed gears (oxymoron) in order to get a happier engine cruise rpm; yet not cause other issues down the road, going to 49's would be great compromise.... butt they are fading away and not reasonably available (reasonably is the key..... cost has skyrocketed, availability getting less). So that is leaving folk on this journey to considering what 53 (16r20) to go to.


conflicts:
. seems all the 16r20's have speed rating of 55mph... means your driving highway close to max all the time... lots have done it..... buttttt.
. fender and chassis rubbing (work around available but additional cost.
. more weight to stop
. more wear on bearings
(last two may be minimal .... the jury of history not yet come to a conclusion)

advantage....
. combined with high speed gears... a much happier longer lasting engine.
. improved ground clearance (not so big a deal)
. improved water fording (again negligible)

Don't want to end up with issues like the xl of past.... and xml issues more recent on the FMTV's.

So any specific tire suggestions and why / why not too?

Speed ratings are based on the tires maximum speed at its load index. Meaning 55mph at 14,540 on the Goodyear AT2/3 tires.

You can look at 12R24.5s and fab up some type of bolt on mount to run the CTIS. You probably could even run a dual 12R24.5 setup in the rear with a semi aggressive tire and a 14.00R20 up front. or a 12R up front.

If you can get some 14.00 core's there are a few remolding places we looked into that will remold them for under $400 each so basically its like a new tire for that cost with no dry rot or that has been sitting.



Bigger tires with high speed gears is not a good idea. those 53s will kill that 3116 on its power. on my 923 when I had the 16spd cat with a .83OD combined with a .77 OD of the transfer case my nearly 300hp engine could barely keep it in overdrive even empty with 6.44 axles.Those tires are heavy. Around 420lbs with no runflat and 550 with a runflat. It was not a happy camper for that motor. it struggled alot to keep the truck in the powerband with the ratios favoring highway speed.

good point.... have not seen any weight charts though... only the one speed rating.... Got a suggested link(s) for better detail on that?

good point on speed rating/load/psi per tire.... have not seen any good charts on this... only the one speed rating of 55.... Got a suggested link(s) for more detail on load/speed/psi charts?

really like the retread idea.... got more info??? and what does one look for when seeking a "core"?
