CUCV Glow Plugs

SO of course we are getting hit with the great snow storm and the CUCV with the plow wont start. LOL
Question, I am measuring 24 volts to ground at the orange wires coming off the solenoid. which cycles on and off about every second.
Are the glow plugs 24 volt? If so what is the replacement for them?

Yes it is. I found some info on line that talked about measuring 24 volts to the glow plugs until a load is put on it.
And that the quick on off was a safety if the glow plugs burned out.
I replaced all 8 glow plugs and connectors with the 60G. She started right up.
Now to troubleshoot the plow. ahh.

I removed the resistor from the firewall, enlarged the terminal ring from the wire that hooks to the driver's side of the resistor, attached it to the main 12v stud next to the glow plug solenoid and installed a set of AC 60G's about 8 years ago and never had a problem since.

It works fine either way. The stock GPs are 12v. The resistor knocks it down to 12v when the relay is engaged and current is flowing to the GPs.

Otherwise, you'll measure 24v at the top of the GP relay.

I have been using the tried and true A C Delco 13G glow plugs since day one. CUCV's that I buy and service when they leave they have the 13G glow plugs and the resistor back in operation. It never failed me and I used them harder then anyone else on this site. This M1009 started when all other vehicles failed to start after being run thru mud and water on a nice summer day. The alternators. They failed to charge until I split them and blew out the mud and sand. The 13 G require no cutting of the spades and are still available. Happy Holidays

How did you change the connectors?

Cut them off as close as possible to the connector, then crimp on new .250 female connectors. Spend a few cents more and get quality connectors. Vinyl is junk. Use nylon (clear). 3M is always a good choice.

Definitely use good connectors... these seal off the ends. Also, they are a good source for any other wiring needs.

BestBoatWire is very good! They sell all kinds of stuff. It is very reassuring to see the seal ooze out of the heat shrink of the connector! Now knowing you have a good mechanical crimp as well as an adhesive bond also that is sealed.

Yep. When I get a cable made by them I always get the clear heat shrink on the terminals. You can see the sealant oozing out of the ends. I use the clear because that lets me see what's going on in there. Corrosion is bad. Hidden corrosion is much worse.
