MTVR Transmission Dipstick

I took delivery of a 2003 MK23 this week and overall I’m really happy with the truck. It was purchased thru IP by a local civil construction firm that bought nine of these trucks to convert to water trucks. Their plans changed and they sold off all nine trucks. They all came out of Yerma, and mine has about twelve thousand miles. I’ve been collecting all the filters and oil so I can do a complete service.

Oddly, the transmission dipstick is MIA. I’m still reaserching how to find the TM’s for these trucks, but anxious to get the transmission oil changed, but stuck without a dipstick. Does anyone have a P/N for the dipstick, or any suggestions on where I might source one?

Thanks in advance for any help. I also posted in the Parts Wanted section.

Cheers.

Just to confirm, are you checking the correct hole? The one near the intake stack is the tranny fill, and the dipstick port is under the cab

That’s a great question. The first place I looked was the vertical fill tube and I thought the dipstick was missing from the plug. Then I realized that was just the fill tube, and found the horizontal tube that exits behind the cab on drivers side. The tube is there but the dipstick is MIA.

Hi Ellis6 ,

Your note mentions receiving a MK23 back in November. I see that you are a new member - so WELCOME to the group.

Be sure to post a few pictures of your new toy - and maybe a picture of the tube where the missing dipstick should be. That might give a better idea of exactly where and what it is that you need to find. The TM's can be harder to find - but "current conflict" might be the right place to start...

Again, welcome to Steel Soldiers!

If the dipstick was missing then water may have gotten into the tranny. I think that is what happened to mine. My 7 Ton has the dipstick but it was missing the O ring and I think water got into the tranny. I will tell you right now that that dipstick is 5 or 6 feet long so shipping is going to be interesting.

I am seeing the same thing as Wes:

I would imagine that a creative shipping clerk could coil that spring steel dipstick in a thin 24x24x1 inch box (maybe a little bigger) and ship it. Of course that would require somebody to think outside (inside?) the box. Just a little maybe?

Thank you for the welcome Mullaney. I’ve been a member for awhile but haven’t posted much. My first MV was/is an M45a2, which led to an M923a2, which led to the MK23. Yup, I’ve got the sickness.

Jon, I was able to borrow a dipstick out of another MK23, and the fluid level was topped and showed no evidence of having any water. I’m planning to do a complete drain and filter change just to make sure.
thanks for the help guys.

Thanks Ellis6

Guess I just got smarter... Now I know I need to know to click on the name when somebody appears to be "new" here.
I figured out that you started out here in 2016, WAY long before I got here!

Anyhow, I had seen the low numbers of "messages" and ASSuMEd. Sorry sir.

The green disease - yep - I have it too :)

No worries Tim, I’m eternally grateful for the gracious help provided on this for I’m. I would be lost without it and maintaining these trucks would be so much harder without you guys.

cheers,

Dirk
