I took delivery of a 2009 M1165a1 today that I bought at GP back in October. After clearing the EUC, it spent some time in the extremely capable hands of @Retiredwarhorses . Not that any of you need to hear this, but Steve is the best in the business and was awesome to work with. Looking forward to being less of a lurker and more of a contributor now that I have the truck.

I've updated the original post with some more pictures. Work has been pretty crazy so other than a few minutes when it arrived I haven't gotten to spend much time with it. And I can't really drive it yet because I'm still waiting on the *bleeping* SF97.

To answer some of your questions:
Wheels: 17x8.5 GT Cepek. These have the stock offset I have been told.

Tires: 40x13.5 R17 Milestar Patagonia. There are not many options for 40" tires on 17" wheels that are D or E load rated. I had never even heard of these tires before, but after doing some research the Jeep crowd apparently loves them. They are somewhat of a hybrid MT, in that the center part of the tire looks more like an AT, which is supposed to make them a little quieter.

Lift: None, other than the body lift that is installed at the factory. I think I have heard that is 1.5" but I could be wrong (4/27/2021 edit: I was wrong; the body lift they put on at the factory is 0.5", not 1.5"). I have also heard that when the armor is removed these trucks lift up a good bit. In any event, there appears to be plenty of room for the 40" tires. I will post a picture below that Steve sent me with the stock wheel/tire in back and the new wheel/tire in front. That really shows you the difference.

Age: It's a 2009, with around 16k miles and 2000 hours on the tachometer, but as noted below, Steve had to replace the motor.

Steve focused on the mechanical aspects of the truck and it is now in good working order. It needed a new generator and a new motor and a few other things, but otherwise it was not a bad truck. Steve is of course welcome to weigh in here with his views.

My first focus is going to be the interior. Planning to sound deaden it and have marine carpet installed. Also plan to add new seats. It will need paint eventually, but I will worry about that after the interior is done.

the generator was changed from a 400 to a 200amp, no need for that much power and the 400 is nothing but a hindrance for maintenance as well as anything else needing to be accessible on the drivers side of the engine.

Here's a question I always had for the 11XX series trucks being sold out of Yermo. Is the roof still the armored steel or does GP remove that roof and install another roof?

The M1165A1's have a factory aluminum roof with aluminum back wall and plug over turret hole.
Some of the M1151A1's have the factory thick aluminum roof overlay over the factory aluminum roof .
M1114 trucks coming out in GA. have the steel factory roofs.

the roof on the CA m1165 is the standard 1/4” thick aluminum roof. When the truck gets armor, there is an additional wider layer of aluminum (overlay) added to the top of the basic roof. This overlay makes the truck look like the flying nun if left on and other armor removed. GA leaves the overlay on a lot of its trucks.
when the m1165 gets armor, the basic back wall is left in place. The m1152 either has the basic aluminum wall OR the armor wall. This is why you see m1152 with the aluminum roof and no back wall.

Still waiting on my euc to clear on my M1165. It’s been 2 months so hopefully not too much longer. Was hoping/planning to put 40’s on mine as well. Did you have to move your exhaust to be able to fit them? Is there any concern about them flexing up into the fiberglass hood? Any idea what your total height is now? Thanks for the pics...looks good man

Congrats on your truck. In case it helps you estimate your timeline, I bought mine on 10/21/20, cleared the EUC on 1/12/21, and received the SF97 on 4/29/21.

I do not believe my exhaust was moved, or if it was, Steve did not mention it. The height at the roof is about 75". I do not have a registration or tag yet and thus have not really driven it, much less wheeled it, but there looks to be plenty of room in the wheel wells. It helps that these wheels have the stock offset and thus are more or less tucked into the wheel wells, but I'll be careful offroad until I know that I'm not going to mess up my hood.

The exhaust has a bit of movement it can do because of the seal just inboard of the hangar.
When I checked my tire for putting on snow chains, the exhaust was only an inch from the rubber.
I kicked the exhaust a couple times, now there is almost 3 inches of clearance, should be plenty for a 40" tire to fit (only 1.5" closer than the 37")

Thanks man! Really appreciate the info/pics. Very helpful! So I've been debating getting the sf97. I've gotten conflicting info on whether or not it has “for offroad use only” on it. If it doesn't that will be helpful but if it does I can't use it anyways. My Wife is an attorney so she's familiar with the process of titling a car by going through the courts and getting a dec action. This was our plan if it does have “for offroad use only” on it. Will probably be sweating it until it's finally titled. Thanks again for the info

Where did you get it? What branch did it belong to? For what it's worth, mine was a USMC truck and my SF97 was clean--i.e., there is no "off road" stamp on it.
