New Flex plate has arrived from Summit. I'm wondering if I need to hit this with some POR15 or something. Seems like it'll rust pretty quick.View attachment 851046

Give it a shot and paint it up. Hope it helps. If it was mine it would be one and done, no paint. I don't think the originals had paint. I'm sure it would out last me without paint. Your project is coming along good, keep it up, looking forward to your progress.

I use por15 on all my bodywork I'm doing...the flywheel isn't really out in the elements to much though but it doesn't hurt to use it...it is a pretty big prep job but does work very well when done right...really if you have time to paint it why not.

Well, based on the feedback of "f*ck it" and "paint it..why not" (my translation of events), I suppose I won't waste the expensive POR15, and can give it the rattle can job, the ultimate happy medium.

Quick, easy, cheap, dries to a nice flat black (not that I'm ever really going to see it).

So...according to the manual I need 6 *new* flex plate bolts part number 3727207. Apparently these stretch like head bolts.
All the local stores only sell flywheel bolts which are too long.
Those won't arrive till Tuesday, so it appears I can take my time looking over the transmission issues, moving the tranny back 4 inches, and making everything nice and tidy for a quick Tuesday install.

A failure to plan is a plan to fail as they use to say in the military. 🤦‍♂️

Seems like this handy dandy flywheel grabber will be useful for torquing those bolts to spec. I’m sure other people who don’t use this tool have a simple solution.

That tool can be great to hold the flywheel for sure....if you haven't used one then here's a tip...get someone to hold it while you torque the bolts...doing both is interesting at best with a fair warning that if the tool slips it turns that new sharp tooth flywheel into a knuckle removing saw blade...welding gloves help!

For the people interested in small details of a truck history, here is a tag that was on the left inner wheel well under the hood. (I blurred the VIN because I'm not sure what kind of nefarious things one could do with it).

I'll try to preserve it.

heh, on my 1008 i first checked this on glove box. Just after week or two realised that army replaced for some reason glove box door. Real VIN was different, probably options (hehe, options) too...
I've got the VIN in 4 places (that I know of) on this. Drivers Door on the cab. Drivers Door on the door itself, and the actual VIN tag on the dash that you can see looking in the windshield on the drivers side, and the order tag in the engine compartment.

I know everyone like a good VIN number when times are tough, but they may have overdone it here.
I actually want to get a cover for the one on the dash. I saw something recently where car thieves were pulling VINs off peoples cars, forging VIN plates and sticking them on similar stolen cars. I don't want a swat team outside my house, when someone hits a bank in a car with my VIN. 💀

I put a piece of paper over mine on all my cars...no reason anyone needs to see it!!

OK. I opted for the 'Gut Swap' from the new $30.00 voltmeter to the old casing and plate.

It doesn't appear that the "wings" on the old meter made any difference in fitment.

Once I get the batteries reconnected I can make sure it reads right with the old plate. If not, I'll have to live with the new display plate, but I'm going to keep the rest of the old casing.

The new ones that cost 90 bucks gave me 'anal glaucoma' because I couldn't see my ass paying that amount. 😂

You guys must live in the ghetto. And intentional concealing a VIN is a crimes code in most states. No one would go thru the trouble to try and steal your VIN number. The state and title are issued in your name legally. Happy Thanksgiving to all you Secret Agent men.
