I agree on lifting more than a spare tire, but who hasnt done something that could be bad ? But which spare? A 16 is heavier than a 14, which is heavier than a 395. If a person stays around the wt. limit of a 16, shouldnt be a problem..
I was looking around to find the NSN and about all I found was an Upper Spare Tire Davit listed as PN#SS-DAK-5TM939. Couldn't seem to find the specs on it and there are some differences between newer trucks and older. The TM's don't specify a lifting capacity - but points more to its intention of lifting your spare tire.
I am sure it could lift other things but I wouldn't call it a crane. The military annually tests its cranes lifting capacity and this device isn't done that way - suggesting that it has one purpose and lifting things heavier than a spare tire might be a bad idea...

A person could fab up a beefier davit with a few 100 lbs more capacity though.
Iv done that several times. looking like im a track star getting ready to take the gold, all the while doing something i know is gonna hurt or kill me if i get something wrong..

It should pick the fifth wheel no problem. I couldnt see it weighing more 600 lbs. which a 16R20 i remember reading on here somewhere, weighs in the 500-600 lbs range.yeah i wont be needing the fifth wheel i was thinking take it off along with the wedges make a nice flat area on top of the chasis

So, I don't know for sure about weight. I just Web Searched "M1088 5th Wheel Weight" and came up with a NSN (part number). Not necessarily what you have and this weight includes the shipping container. I was pretty shocked with what it weighed!

After all the babble, I guess what I am saying is that might be a little more weight (even if you took off a thousand pounds for the container) than would be safely lifted with your spare tire davit. My guess was a couple thousand pounds. This shows possibly three times that much...

from my days working on 18 wheelers in the late 90s, we used a 1tn eng hoist/cherry picker to rmv/instal them from/on 18 wheelers. I wouldnt there would be much difference in civi vs. mil fifth wheels on a 5tn tck. But i could be very wrong. Just like i didnt think the crane boom minus lift cylinders would weigh in the low 3000 lb range.
My kubota has a 3000 lb lift cap on the loader and i could pick the boom up bout 10”, and with a 600 lb 6’ shredder on the back, it still wanted pick the rear tires up enough i had to use 4x4 to move the boom.

That must be difference mullaney was talking about between the older and newer tcks. That does stand to reason since A0 were duals and possibly some of the early A1s even had the A0 davits.I'm thinking it's a bad idea.
The A0 tire davit won't handle a super single.
I'd come up with an alternate plan.
