M37 Fuel pump, original or electric?

My 66 year old fuel pump gave up. I would like some opinions on whether to rebuild, replace or abandon the mechanical pump and switch to an electric fuel pump?

Midwest Military sells rebuilt pumps that are awesome. I'd never put anything else on. (y)

I put an electric pump on it today. I just happened to a 24 volt Facet pump in stock. It’s getting plenty of fuel now but it quits running after it warms up. It will get a new coil tomorrow.

Do you know if they are building them with parts that can stand up to the bad fuel being sold today?
Yes send John your core and you will get one back. I do not drive in the rain as mine is just a show queen now so I just put on a carter mechanical fuel pump and let the wipers be decorations.

I was reading about the after market coils so be care full. I got lucky and found a good oem take out on a bidding sight.

You are so right. Finding a working M series coil is a challenge. I’ve been told the new chrome ones come from Korea. I don’t know if that is true but they don’t take the heat very well. I imagine it gets pretty hot inside the distributor housing even with the little vacuum line that is supposed to circulate some air through there. I replaced the coil today with another chrome unit. I took it for a nice long ride and it ran real good. I will keep the electric fuel pump in play. I just think it moves more fuel and allows the fuel to stay a bit cooler. As for the coil, I once made an adaptor that went inside the distributor in place of the coil. I connected a spark plug wire to a contact that mated up to the spring on the distributor cap. I ran the spark plug wire and the negative points wire out of the inspection plug hole. I used a 12 volt coil ( because that’s all I had) that I half tapped the batteries to supply +12 v. I mounted the coil to the fire wall. I’m thinking of doing this again but I will use a 24 volt coil. It will stay a lot cooler and if it needs to be replaced it will be much easier. I know... I won’t be able to Ford a river with it. Wasn’t planning on it anyway.😉

Installed a Facet 480564E 24V electric pump 15 years ago and have never looked back. Mount as close to the tank as possible. These pumps are "pushers" not "suckers". Fittings are 1/4"x18. https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/eppages/facetgoldflo.php
Take the original off and block the hole to the block. Pick up the vacuum for the wipers off the manifold.

I cut out a "blind" out of sheet metal and then mounted it using the fuel pump bolts. I will try to get a pic for you tomorrow.

For a while, I thought my fuel pump was shot but it turned out to be the rusted fuel lines. Ethanol collected water and all the low spots in my original fuel lines rusted, clogging the flow. The rust never even made it to the filters, so I had trouble figuring it out until I blew compressed air through the line with the gas tank open. There was ¼ cup of big rust chunks in there.

Been running a VPW rebuilt pump in my daily driver for almost 4 years now, totally trouble free. I did install an inline filter on the suction side of the pump, most people seem to make the mistake of installing the filter between the pump and the carburettor. The ethanol gas hasn’t caused any serious issues, but that’s probably because I use the truck daily. It usually drives about 15 miles each day, with a little more on weekends.
