Yellow Top Battery Install (battery box)

Hello folks. I’m going to replace the batteries in my m1123. The ones in it are mismatched and old. I want to do a yellow top install. And I want to try and use a custom battery box hold down. I thought I’d share for feedback and to let others know of the option.

Based off my research the D34 Yellow Top will work (X2). I like the deep cycle offering because I don’t drive it often. So it sits for a few weeks at a time. Do you think I will still need a tender? What recommendation? Any way to run a plug in outside the box so I don’t need to pull the seat?

As for the hold down, I want to remove the tray (I don’t have the hooks or the top bracket) and I want to use a custom box. See the pics below. The measurements seem to be ok.


I figure I can black out the battery box and seal off the holes with plugs or something. Install this battery box and the two D34’s and hopefully the battery cables I have will work as is.

please feel free to give advice. My Humvee is more custom than correct. So the box will work with the current theme.

Put in a solarizer unit. Helps keep the batteries from sulfating over extended periods of time. My truck sits over the winter here in New England and in the spring is still charged up ready to go. Been using the unit for years.

I just ordered the yellow tops and the optima battery box (holder) to mount them in (inside the Humvee battery box). I also ordered a set of the red terminal protectors. And I picked up a NOCO Genius Pro 50 to be sure I am able to charge... going to get that slave plug to use as a charging port or trickle charging port for long term storage. Now I just need some paint... Ill share as I complete the project... I know this is not for all... but it works for me... Or at least I hope it will.

The pro 50 is massive overkill unless you plan on running the batteries down regularly, and then need the truck soon afterwards. You're probably better off financially to buy a pair of 12V lithium jump boxes and a noco gen 5X2 or 5X10. You can hardwire them in and have each battery charged separately, which is better for them long term. I've been using the 5X2 for years. If my batteries get low (dash cam drains them when sitting more than a week or so) it takes a few hours to charge them up to where it will easily/safely start.

Pro 50 + slave port adapter will set you back about $1k.
Gen 5x2 is is around $140, and jump boxes more than big enough to start the truck at about $200 each (GB70) will cost you half that, plus have more actual uses. Even a pair of the GB150s is only $600 for the pair. (which I do own a pair of them for my business, and they are awesome)

Thank you for the info. This is great. I did already order all the parts. But I could return some. Unsure what I’ll do. I’m tied up with work and I think it will be a week or so till I can start anything. I picked up the Pro 50 + thinking it would be nice for the garage in general. I have been using a CTEK. But I like your ideas too.
