Black Dog Reverse Light Kit (install) With LED Lights - New reply to watched thread

Hey guys. I am cleaning up a few thing on my Humvee. It’s mostly a custom build (in progress), but the questions are…

I have raptor liner all over the place. So I’m trying to clean up and rebalance things as I go. Should I replace the shifter boot as part of the project? Or only if it rips (common sense says wait and see if it rips)… but I read it’s likely.

I have the LED light kit. It has the reverse lights built in. I think each light has one open wire, is this the reverse light plug? And if so will the black dog kit include a jumper so both light up? Or do I need to order something to jump to the other side as well?

Also, when I am doing these projects, I try to recondition what needs work. In this case. Can anyone tell me if there are other parts I can get to revamp the shift assembly. I’d like to replace the rubber flap between the shifter and top plate if it exists. Mine is mostly gone. My shifter knobs should clean up. I prob will paint the plate and shift levers to recondition. And I’ll soak the bolts to see if they are good enough to reuse. I want to replace the gear indicator, but I think I can clean it up. And I see transfer case shift plates out there. How hard is that to do? Looks like I would need to rivet it. I have seen stickers too.

thanks for any help.

I just ordered a used but practically new shifter assembly. So no longer looking for shifter parts. But I’d love to get feedback on the black dog reverse light harness with the led tail lights that have the reverse light built in.

I can drop a few from the site.

Here is the black dog reverse wire harness for a 4 speed.

Here is the black dig install video they share:

Also I grabbed a pic from the eBay listing showing the shifter. And an old pic of my Humvee. Also added a pic of the tail light and the extra wire. Drivers side has an R, I screwed up the pass side (I’ll replace the pic soon) but it might have two letters.

If you need more specific pics. Just ask. I’ll be around all day. I hope to start this project next weekend, or the week after (waiting on parts).

Per the video, it looks like the one red wire powers the backup lights. I don’t know how that ties into the internal LED’s. Also, I’m not positive which tail light wires to plug into for the packard plugs as well. Guessing the instructions will help once I get them. I’m also reading some threads. But they seem to be having trouble too.

Till then I will be also getting ready to redo my battery box. I’ll post pics on that in another thread, when I start it.

I did this a couple years ago, so please pardon me if I do not remember all the specifics.

First, get some nutserts and use them to mount the shifter instead of having to fight bolts above and nuts below when installing the shifter.

Second, I hat paying the HMMWV tax, so I made up my own harness and used a generic reverse, and license plate light. I see now the brilliant idea that some have used the black out lights for reverse lights, but I used separate lights. Do'oh!

Call Black Dog with any questions - they are excellent answering customer questions. I used their reverse switch and although was pointed to generic switches that can be used with a bit of fab, I bought the kit and paid the HMMWV tax as it was straight forward to install and I never had any problems with it. I used Packard connectors but you really don't have to if you don't want to.

I like the nutsert idea. I do have a nutsert tool, but might not have the right threaded part, I’ll look. Need to figure out the size.

From reading online, it sounds like the reverse lights will only come on when your in service drive. Not when in the day time running mode. Seems like both should work, or I just need to be in service drive all the time. Which has headlights on too.

I see where people say they used the horn or something else to get power, but I paid a bit for the harness and would like to use it. I wish this was a bit more standard. But I’m sure I’ll eventually figure it out.

I rigged the lights on my rig to automatically go into Service Drive without doing anything by default. My goal was making it street legal, and not give LEO any excuse to pull me over here in Florida if I forgot to manually turn them on. So the reverse lights work no matter what when called for.

I got ya. I’m just looking to retain what I have at the moment but want the reverse lights to work with stop light (day light mode), and service drive (night time mode). Plus I’m trying to figure out how to wire it. I think I have an idea. I am going to get a splitter and just run the red wire from the black dog harness to the “R” wire on both tail lights. I bet that will work for the service drive mode. I’ll work on figuring out stop light. I still need a license plate light too. So looking now for that.

Black Dog (not sure if others have) also did something similar to what you did.

I just ordered a 100 feet of the military wire 14 gauge. Says it’s same stuff. Looking for an assortment of packard plug ends now.

Just ordered a hand full of 14 gauge packard connectors. Let’s see what happens.

Edit: I also added the 14 gauge female plug end too. This way I have a few on hand in case I need to do any repairs.

Found a cheap plate holder with a license plate light. The one I have, has no light.
