Heater Blower Location

I have noticed that many M35A2s have the cab heater box and blower mounted on its side. The coolant hoses come out the top. My heater box and blower is mounted with the blower hole facing down and the coolant hoses coming out the side facing the engine. Is there some reason why the heater assemblies were mounted differently during the production history?

The position of the cab heater is awkward and impedes access to the side of the engine. The different mounting arrangements IMHO are reflections of attempts to make it a little less bad.
The system is closed, with a little copper/brass heat exchanger (mini radiator) in the box and it does not care which way it is mounted.

A good mod is to take the box apart and shorten it (cut the box and re-attach the "end cap". The result is a much more manageable heater box. This can then be mounted inside the cab, on the passenger side and a 5ton heater distribution manifold (inlet on the right side) works plug and play for the Deuce.

It was a pain to remove the box and place it on top of the engine on a small piece of plywood so I could access the hydraulic head. I had to do that several times. My version with the blower fan opening facing down appears to be beneficial because water cannot flow through the attached 4 inch hose and enter the fan area. Mounting it in the cab would make access to filters and lines much easier.

Like Cattlerepairman said its way better to mount the entire heater assembly inside the cab and it fits very nicely on the passenger side under the glove box! I looks so much better and its not in the way of any work you doing under the hood!

This is the way the M35A3 heater is located. A substantial improvement IMHO.
