Power steering fluid question

My power steering pump has been wrrrrrrrring. In the morning when it’s cold it doesn’t do it. But after it warms up it starts making noise. Also when it’s cold (before starting) the fluid level is fine but if I check it after I drive a few miles the dipstick is bone dry. Is this a big issue or do I just need to bleed the power steering. I have the pump with the reservoir attached

Sound like you have fluid draining back to the pump when it's off, and then running low while operating. Is your cooler higher than the pump? Fill up the system while it's running, and bleed the system. The whirring sound could be air. Just be ready to catch the excess fluid if it is draining back, after you shut it down. Check for any leaks while it's running.

Do not fill the system while running, that is a good way to lose a hand or some fingers.
Do you have to add any fluid or does it return to full when it cools.
