deuce air pak

I just put a different air pak on. it is a older style. I added some oil and vented the air at the air pak. then drove the truck around. No pedal so I pumped it about ten time and got some pedal. I drove it a bit more and tried the brakes and they worked, but were very hard to press the pedal down.
any ideas?

You should install an original air pak...I would assume you do not have the specs on the one you installed and whether or not it has the volume and pressure requirements for your unit. Don't forget the OHT every six months per you lube order...

Rizzo, perhaps more info needed. What truck, what was happening with brakes to cause you to swap airpack etc. I have had both old and new on my truck and both work well.

His post was "different" air pak... not replacement... so if it is the short one... he needs help in the bleed department...

yes it is a little shorter. looks a little different. came off a M-35 residue truck. had oil in it

i will give it a try. I had just bled it before the replacment and i bled the airpak when i put it on. thought I would give it a try first and see if the air works out.

now that I think about it. I am compressing the air to get petal then it is pushing back after i let off the pedal.

Rizzo, I am getting ready to go from "the standard" airpack to one with a shorter can. Is there anything special needed, or does everything line up? I put what I thought was a new airpack on my truck, now it keeps losing fluid. I suspect something wrong with the new airpack as I rebuilt the master cyl, and it shows no sign of fluid leaking.

But the new airpack looked really pretty! Your not having much luck with the brakes on that truck....

I managed to make the last few miles to Haspin, with your wrecker, with(almost) no brakes. Oh,what a thrill ( Crack does nothing for me now)!;-) I think I'll try some Ruhypnol, next.

Don't forget to add the wipers on that bill, too!

It seemed impossible to stop it with no air pressure. I didn't bother to use the brake pedal after I realised what was up(it was useless). I really dont think I could have even held it inplace on a slight hill(with no air).

Bill? I think I recall Jeff coming to the rescue on that one, and I'm pretty sure I saw the "underside of your winch" while fixin' it up? Oh my, what a big winch you have!

Got an airpack problem myself, can't find the right rebuild kit(this one sticks even after lube)
should I change it out to a different type? Pics show the one I have and the one the TM shows.original problem was brakes locked up, brake lights on, pedal halfway down, once I released air pressure, lights went out, pedal slowly returned.
any other ideas?

I find that the airpack that has not been lubricated often enough with a very small amount of OHT will almost always, as in ALWAYS, stick on when brakes are applied shortly after the OHT is added. I have screwed up 3 airpacs by adding OHT after I bought deuces from GL that hadn't been lubricated. I am learning how to rebuild airpacs now to save the ones I have had to replace. It is generally a sticky airpac that messes the brakes up and makes them lock. You can check all the hoses and the master cylinder but it usually is the air pac. Be sure the exhaust air can get out when you release the brake pedal. JT out

I remember seeing something about removing the vent from its current setup and running a dedicated vent line? I'll check the vent line as it sits now and make sure it isn't plugged.
I took the whole airpack apart and found the piston gets stuck at each end of the stroke. no scoring or pitting in evidence, inside was clean.
I think I'll just replace it with a new one so I can stop pulling out what little hair I have left

I couldn't find the posting anymore, but there was someone who replaced the allen plug with a pressure line that ended on his steering coloumn with a small valve on it. It was a field mod he applied during a recovery to make it home despite brakes that were locking frequently. I thought thats an interesting and helpful mod in an emergency.

As I am in for airpack repair job myself and I will have a lot of time at hand in the following months I thought I might make a documentation on repairing the deuces airpack. I couldn't find that this issue has already been covered thoroughly anywhere.
