I didn't want to trim fenders and the like to fit taller tires that would make a difference.

As for the carrier, I'm I looking at numerically lower or higher going from 4:56 to 4:10 if that's what I end up doing? The split is right at 4:10/4:56 and I'm not sure what direction I'm going. Down?

If you don't want to start cutting the sheetmetal and do lift kits the first cheap thing to do is buy the tallest regular width tire you can get. I run 255/85-16 BFG's on the stock rims on my 1008. They are about 33.5" tall. No clearance problems whatever. You might be able to run some Interco 34's too. If you don't want to go through the expense of swapping around everything needed for an overdrive transmission, then the next choice is a gear swap. Going to 4.10 is a waste of money and time. Like others have said you will have to change out the carrier also. If you are not going to run tires that require lifts/body modifications,(35" and up), a step down to 3.73's is a good choice. They offer plenty of highway speed and power to match with the 33" tire sizes. I have had 3.73's in all my civilian K30's except the 1977 which I ordered with 4.10's. I went back to 3.73's on my 1979 and was glad I did. They work well with non-overdrive transmissions.
