Draining oil from Deuce

Hey Guys,

The Deuce has probably 3 to 4 quarts too much oil it looks like. It's well past the k in "check" when cold. What's the easiest way to drain some? I was just going to pull the drain plug on the pan but figured there might be an easier less messy way.

Thanks

Are you sure you are checking it correctly?
Don't check it cold. Warm the engine up fully and check it within a minute after you shut it down.
Checked cold it will always show way over full if it has enough oil in it.
The stock oil filter system drains back into the pan when it sits.

You can drain some thru the drain hole on the bottom right side of the oil filter housing. Should be a 1/4" plug.

Oil level on the deuce is really kind of funny. Because they couldn't be bothered to install check valves in the oil filter assembly, the filters drain all of their oil over a 6 hour period. That means that if the oil level is at the FULL mark when the engine is warm, when you shut it down, and check it in the morning, it will be 1-1/2 inches above the FULL mark.

Because this is the way it behaves, the military wrote up some comic book adventures in PS magazine that tell exactly how you must check your oil in the deuce: when hot, shut down, and wait exactly 1 minute before checking your oil, and it should be FULL. After 6 hours from shutdown, it should be 1-1/2 inches above FULL.

They did not use check valves so that in cold cold wheather when you use the oil pan heater it heats all the oil. So you are not trying to pump frozen oil thought the eng. These trucks were made too work all over the world. In all kinds of places most of us would not chose too be in and work. One day they could be in Texas the next they be Russia.

If you do have to remove some oil pull the rear sump plug with the truck sitting level. The rear sump holds about 2 quarts, maybe a little more. I would review the PM articles referenced in one of the posts in the thread about oil levels in the multifuel engine and how to check it. Severl posts are right on the money as to how to properly check the oil level.

Let us know how you make out.

The cold check level is at the "K" on the word Check on the dipstick. That correlates with approximately 1 1/2" above full on the dipstick. Say what you will, this is where 22 quarts of oil lay in a cold multifuel. Except for old Cat engines in dozers, I have always been taught to check the oil BEFORE you start the engine. So with a multifuel with drain back element type oil filters, we had to have a datum point, which turns out to be the letter "K" on the word check. If you use my spin-on adaptors then you will check oil cold after adding 22 quarts of oil and start the engine momentarily to fill the filters which are anti drain back and give you almost instant oil pressure on the next start ups.
