info request on my new truck

can anyone help me find the history on my new truck.

here is all the info from GL:

1971 General Products Mdl M35A2 6X6 2 1/ 2 Ton cargo truck Sn 04J-33071-0539-12299, hard top, GVW 18, 530 lbs, meter indicates 1, 474 hours, odometer indicates 39, 469 mile. Powered by a Continental Mdl LDT-465-1D 6 cylinder Multifuel engine driving through a five-speed manual overdrive transmission and two-speed transfer case.driven to location, does not start, TMC Pn 7538687 10, 000 lb capacity winch assembly, includes camouflage pattern cargo cover

D is the latest engine revision but no way will guarantee you a "D" turbo. Trust me, the "D" is more common now-a-days but if you get stuck with the evil "C" turbo, I can help you out in a trade of sorts.

ok cool. then the next logical and seemingly obvious question is would i be correct in assuming i should only give that to the insurance company? seems the whole number is a standerd length vin.

My 66' Kaiser/85' rebuild came with a D engine and C turbo.

You are confusing the standard car VIN with serial number of the truck. In your case the truck serial number is only 9 digits. Some trucks have 9 or less.

When you fill out the SF-97 request for GL you should use the "serial" number. As CARNAC said the registration number is not part of the serial number.

I have received SF-97s with the serial number only, serial and registraion, registration only or partial serial numbers from the government.

Whatever is on the title is the number you will give to the insurance company.


The only way to tell which turbo you have is by visual inspection. The "C" is skinny at the top and the "D" is fatter. This has been discussed and pictures provided many time in the past. If you do a search on "turbo picture" you will find what you are looking for.

My bad, I was told by a trusted person, the C and D in the engine desription, determined the model of turbo. Yes nothing is perfect, and anything can be changed, but I found this to be true most times.

thanks for all the info, i found that comparison thread, unfortunatly the GL pics dont show the turbo so i guess ill have to wait to find out.

"04J-33071" is your registration number. It is a number used by the military similar to a License plate. It has no real bearing in the civilain world.

Like this truck, my registration number + the serial number is 17 digits, and like this truck, the entire number was printed on my truck's ID plate as its Identification Number. Because modern VIN's are also 17 digits, I told my DMV that my VIN was the combined registration + serial number. GL was happy to issue the SF97 with that 17 digit number, as it fit what was in their records.... Yes, it may technically be wrong, but it is unique to the truck, and it is easy for the powers-that-be to find and verify, and they liked it just fine.

If my truck didn't have the entire 17 digits on the ID plate, as the identification number, I would have just given them the frame serial number.

One other thing, it isn't exactly unusual for a truck to have a frame stamped with only the last digits of the VIN. I have had several vehicles from the '60s that were done that way, and I have a 2005 that has the last several digits of the VIN etched, or stamped, on every part that is valuable.
