I have wanted to put a 4l60 transmission in my m1009 for a while because I want it to have the overdrive for the freeway as well as be able to handle more torque than the th400 when I put the 6.5l turbo engine I want in it. My main concern is what do I have to do to get this transmission to fit? what adaptor do I need for my transfer case with is OEM. and will I need to cut my propeller shafts and reposition my cross member? I've taken transmissions out of these trucks before so the installation isnt my concern but is there anything ellse I should be worried about? Has anyone done this? How hard would it be to put an electronic version of this transmission in when the engine dosnt have any electronic controlls.

let me know thanks

Are you sure you meant 4L60 and not 4L80????
well I know it will be expensive but I'm not worried about that. I meant the 4l60 unless you can get a 4l80 that runs on vaccume or if its not a pain in the ass to put an electrical controlled transmition in a cucv. also how would the engine end up running with out the vaccume force from the throttle body going some where? with all that said. has any one done this? and how feasible is it?

You have to get a stand along transmission computer. Not sure of your exact setup but they are available to put computer transmissions on non-computer cars.

For those that don't know, the 4L60 is the new name for the 700R4. 3L80 is the 400 turbo and the 4L80E is the bad arse overdrive juice tranny. There are a few ppl here with 4L80E experience. Poorwhiteboy comes to mind. Devilman96 put one in his Oh-9 but he doesn't post up much. If you do go 4L80E you will need a reluctor ring in the tranny for it to work for you so I am told.

Ok. I've done more research and a 4l80e is probably a better match for what I want. I just need to know what mods/adaptor kits I'll need to put it in the m1009 with 6.2l engine I have.

I am figuring I'll need to get an adaptor for the transfer case and move the cross member back as well as have both drive shafts cut and the rear one shortened and front lengthened.

I have been watching for anyone with this knowledge to post. I want to do the same thing. Its alot more involved than driveshafts. What I want to do is have the M1008 axles under my blazer and have the overdrive for the freeway. I don't want to go with a manual shift body. If someone has all this info on what to do, I'm willing to buy it, (if I can afford it). I want to do the work myself. I have the 4L80e out of a 2wd diesel and I think all of the harness.
Thanks,
Greg

Why the name change?? 4L60...700R4 whats the difference?? I'm an airplane guy.....kinda know cars...
None, It was just GM's new transmission designation. The name change occurred in 1990, and in '93 the shift logic was changed from hydraulic to electronic, making it the 4L60E.

gm renamed the 700r to 4l60 when they went to a computer controled lockup from tv cable and then to 4l60e in about 93 when they went to full electric valve body full computer shifting
