So today I decided to task fixing the outer dual flat on my drop side. Everyone knows what a pain these things are to break down. I have a mechanical bead breaker that you screw down on the rim the crank the bead loose. You have to do this in about 4 or 5 spots on each side to break it down. After 30 or so minutes, I get the thing off the rim. Pop out the flap and tube and cleaned out the tire. This thing was flat for a couple of months and once I had to do a swamp recovery so it was full of crap. Got it cleaned out, new tube installed, flap inserted and all put back together. Aired it up and down a few times and put the core in. That's when I realized it was still leaking air. CRAP! Mistake #1. I failed to follow my own credo of checking the inside of the tire fully. Took it all back apart and low & behold there is a nail still stuck in the tire. Patched the tube, pulled the nail and reassembled. Victory this time. I tell you all this because I didn't do what I preach. Follow these simple steps. Mark the valve location on the tire. Pull it all apart and check the tube for holes. Once you find them, match the location up with the tire and check it really close in that area for debris in the tire. Had I done this I would have found the nail. Cleanliness inside the tire is imperative, wash it out, wipe it out and vac it out!

I have a tire that has a nail or screw in it but still holds air. I have three tires that need replaced and thats one of them. I just need to take the time to get them off the truck and go to the tire bubba and have the new tires, tubes and flaps put on. I didn't like breaking down lock ring tires 30 years ago, I sure don't want to mess with them now.

Phil, bring it to the next GA Rally and we'll beat the he77 out of it there. I don't enjoy doing tire work, it's a necessary evil of owning deuces and being financially embarrassed. What really irritates me is doing the same tire twice in one morning and rupturing a brand new tube (my last one in stock). Thankfully I had patches (yes you can still buy patches). Guess that makes me an amateur tire bubba!

Kenny, do you put any talcum powder in the tire before putting the tube in??? Just wondering cause we do when assembling aircraft tires with tubes, helps for not getting abrasions on the rubber tube from the tube shifting inside the tire.

Something on the same subject, I recently bought 3 Poneer trailers and they had some really nice 9.00 x 16 tires. I checked the air pressure in one and then set off on a 600 miles return trip. On the return trip with the trailer almost empty people were signalling me to pullover, so I did and checked the tire on my side from the door everything appeared ok, as I went to drive off I felt a thumping, agiain I stopped and noticed a strip of rubber 6in wide by 12 in longer had peeled from the tire. I found a place to park the trailer and returned to get it later.
Upon checking the remaining tires in the yard, I noticed that they were all low on air, I fill them and then I saw all sorts of cracks, upon futher investigation we came to realize that we had recap tires on 2 of the trailers and due to the fact that they sat for a long time the rubber had become dried and brittle. So beware of the really nice looking tires and check to see if they haven't been recapped.
A couple clues to indicate a recaap. check for a line where the rubber has been glued together, sometimes you see the rubber lift a little bit, also check for brandings or writting on the tires, if you have any doubts take them to a big truck tire store and ask someone to check them(usually free)

Talcum powder eh? Have to start using that!

What does your "mechanical bead breaker" look like?
Bjorn, it's an Esco unit. Got it for a righteous price on evilbay! Link to what it looks like;

Amazon.com: Esco Equipment (ESC70160) Manual Bead Breaker: Home Improvement

Really like to have one of the fancy hydraulic ones but that's not in my budget unless I trade for it.

I've learned that deuce tires are trivial compared to HEMMT rims and 16.00x20's. Those are so large and heavy they become nearly impossible to handle.

I've got 3 to fix currently. I lost the last one to a bone of some sorts trying to hit the turn around and park it in the yard. The truck had one flat on recovery but it was on a dual tire axle so I let it slide. Now the inner just behind it is flat as well as one of the tires on my truck. Tough Times in Lee County, I guess I'll get to break down a few split ring rims this week.

I have the same thing, got it from all tire supply

Esco Dual Agricultural Tractor Manual Tire Bead Breaker (ESC-70160): All Tire Supply Company

I wanted something that easily fit in a toolbox. I did break the hook on mine overtightening it but they sent me a replacement hook free.

The NDT's are not real strong tires, by todays radial tire standards. When they are old and with low/ under inflated pressures, they are rather fragile. If you run them flat, as with a dual, it will usually suck the valve stem inside, most often ruining the tube (& sometimes the tire), even though, you might have been able to patch the tube. When running them flat, there is a good chance the whole thing will come apart and scatter tire parts over the highway/and or catching the tire/tube combination on fire. The tube inside the tire, when run flat, causes friction and can lead to a fire. They hammer that part in, when you go for the Haz/Mat endorsement on the CDL!

The ad says no need to remove the outer tire. :)

Heavy duty 10 tons of force break the toughest beads. Breaks inside bead on outside dual farm tractor tires. Requires just 3” of operating space between dual tractor tires. No need to remove outside wheel to change tire on outside dual.

  • Ram Capacity: 10 Tons
  • Distance when closed: 3”
  • Max. Width:24”
Not too sure that is possible on a deuce.
