Deuce question...

How can you tell if the front axle on a deuce is engaging? I dont have any mud to do a tire spin test, and when i flip the air switch i can't really tell a difference in the steering...I does make the air hiss noise when i throw the switch back to the off position. I there anything i can do to test it other than find a mudhole?

Drive it with the switch "on" and make a tight turn. The steering wheel will want to pull out of your hands. It is not good to drive on pavement with the front end engaged!

I didnt notice a huge difference, but i'll give her another try. Maybe i'll take her to wal-mart and use the end of the parking lot to do a better test.

Tell Soldier B "hey, watch the front tires when I do this"

Listen to Soldier B make jokes about your holding your beer.

Proceed to nudge the front bumper against a tree, let clutch out. If the front axle is engaging, one of the front tires will spin and Soldier B will say "yeah ok, it works".

Try jacking up a front wheel with air shift engaged and turn wheel opposite forward direction of rotation and see if it locks up.

:ditto:I agree 6x6 on pavement will make the truck wheel hope. Similair to a normal truck in 4x4. You should feel it.

Also agree its not good to run in 6x6 on dry pavment. The front wheel need to be able to slip when turning.

Find a big muddy field (preferably slick Ga red clay) and drive into it with the switch engaged...if you get stuck immediatly your front axle is not pulling.....if you get stuck so far out that nobody can reach you to pull you out the front axle is working.

yea what he said what wreckerman said, clinto had the best advise untill this... :) the true test of any off road vehicle is if u can get stuck where no other vehicle can get u out, seems like a very very good test, and i think we may have it on this site with these vehicles... :) nice one wreckerman.. :)

Get an old piece of carpet or plastic. Drive onto it slowly until the front wheels are centered on it. Engage the front axle. Put it in low & gas it. If the fronts are engaged the carpet/plastic will spit out the back side of the tires. If it is not engaged it will simply roll off.

You could also go up against a small curb, such as in front of your house. If your fronts are engaged they will make pronounced tire marks as you go over the curb compared to not engaged.

I use Clinto's method but I must warn you, if you center the truck on the tree, you may bend the bumper. I try to line up the tree with one of the frame rails. Better yet, engage the air lever, jack up one front tire and spin it. If it spins, the dog clutch in the transfer has not engaged.

Gentlemen, I'm sitting here reading all these posts about how to pole vault over a mouse turd and I'm surprised at some of the goofy ideas.

The full correct name of the air shift transfer case is "Positive locking air actuated transfer case" Note the word "positive"

The positive locking air shift transfer case is a very easy thing to check. Unlike the sprag transfer case with which you must check operation in both reverse gear and a forward gear a properly operating air shift case is locked when air pressure is put to it by flipping the switch and it can be checked in any gear.

To check it, run the engine to pressurize the brake system and shut the engine off. Place the transmission in any gear and flip the switch. Jack up either front wheel, and try to rotate the wheel that's off the ground. It should only turn a few degrees and stop. It does not matter which way you rotate the wheel.

That's it........

Lower the wheel, disengage the transfer switch, put the tranny in neutral and open another beer.

When the front is locked in it is locked with the rear axles. Unless you have the rear wheels off the ground also, there is no need to put the trans or t-case in gear.
