M1009 air conditioning

Getting AC in a M1009 is complicated and expensive, but I was wondering if anyone was thinking of using the rear unit out of a suburban? You wouldn't get the max cooling, but it might be ok.

It would knock the edge off but thats about it. And under dash unit might be the cheapest route. Dman has front and rear AC in his 09, just the front one didn't keep up.

The M1010 has good a/c from the factory in the ambulance body. I know of a member that has gone so far as to put a fan in the door between the cab and body to move the cold air forward. He claims 70° or less in the box but 100 plus in the front with the windows up.

Yes, a M1009 is more open. It is also a green house on wheels. Those of us in the hotter parts of the country know you have to have cold air blowing on you directly in a vehicle. Otherwise, you are just making a lot of noise and using engine power for no good reason. Get an a/c for the front that will blow on your face.

May be hard to find, but the ambulance setup would be best to retain the alt if going civy route.

I'm implanting a Cicy 6.2 so elimating the driver side Alt, and going strictly 12v.

Gotcha. $975 for the complete and all new parts makes the Nostalgic Air kit look good...

The Nostalgic Air kit is probably your best bet to have R-134A, all new parts and keep the two alternator 24V system. Anything else is going to need an alternator removed or an extra pulley added, rear battery and power strips moved and some other changes as well.

Don't forget that to get a factory air system from a SBS truck, it is going to be 20 plus years old, not be intended for R-134A use and probably need major components replaced. The money spent will probably come pretty close to what the Nostalgic kit will run. It is your truck so do what you want. Just pointing out a few things to consider.

Am getting ready to install the Nastalgic Air system. Looks like a simple straight forward installation. It took the a little bit to get all the parts together since their company has recently relocated. Found a 30 year old to help out. When you push over 50, younger help comes in handy.

Anybody have pictures of the compressor mounted? Im curious if it would get in the way of the turbo, and relocated batteries in my rig. Summers coming up pretty soon and cold air is always a plus. Or i could go cheap and just ditch the doors for turbo AC.

I will start on installing my kit in the next few weeks. Before it gets to much warmer.
For right now, the limo tint job seems to help out a lot. Went with 5% on rear cap. 20% on door windows and 35% on windshield. Hind sight, I should have went with maybe 70% on the windshield.
