The Basic Question:
Can the Deuce SCAVENGE FUEL from Large Underground Storage Tanks (LUSTs) such as are located at “gas stations”?
In other words… Can the In-Tank Electric Fuel Pump LIFT a column of Diesel Fuel from a depth of 8 - 20 feet below itself?
The Scenario:
Hypothetically, imagine that the SHTF Event has occurred. People all over are evacuating. The power grid is juiceless. While there may be plenty of stranded and abandoned vehicles from which fuel might be had, there will exist LARGE quantities of useful fuel patiently waiting to be sucked up from LUSTs with no power for the pumps.
The Theory:
Your deuce is getting thirsty. You pull in to any service station, identify the fill-tube for the Diesel Tank. Next you breach the padlocked cap with your handy bolt-cutter, drop a line from your standard in tank fuel pump. Then you flip a diverter valve, and flip a switch to reverse the in-tank fuel pump, thus evacuating any air from the deep draft line that you‘ve threaded into the LUST. Once you’ve created a column of fuel from LUST level to your fuel tank, you reset the polarity to the in-tank pump and suck up all of the diesel that you need.
Technical Concerns:
1. Has the Military ever created a “KIT” for scavenging fuel?
2. Is the In-Tank Fuel Pump reversible?
3. Does the In-Tank Fuel Pump have the “UMPH” to suck the fuel UP from the depth it would be at in the LUST?
4. Has anyone out there done this by either the proposed method or via another technology?
Side Note:
If this all works for LUST Scavenging operations, it could easily also work for sucking fuel from other vehicles and "ground level" tanks.
