Does anybody know if the m988 transfer case is interchangeable with any of the civilian Hummers? It is nsn 2520014340822, p/n 57K3498 made by
US Tank automotive command in Michigan.

Here is the picture of what it looks like.

That is a NP218 transfer case in the picture. It was used on the first series hmmwv's and I believe the 92-93 H1's. The later series use the NP242. You will need to change your rear propellor and the rear half of the front propellor. I would not use it since it is a weaker transfer case than the NP242.

If that is what sold at Robins AFB yesterday it is a NP 242. At least that is what was on the case. I would be interested in buying one of the 2 that were in the lot. I know sombody that could use the door to.

See picture:
top one is a 218 taken out of a M998 hmmwv, and the bottom one is a 242 that was put in as a replacement.

I've worked on both and the OP picture is a 218.

The documentation says the item was upgraded to the 242 in year 2006. I'll send a pic of the outter box.

Mine doesn't look perfectly like either of your pictures. I think this one is a hybrid. They call it a "242 Conversion".

If a 242, would it work in a civy vehicle?

No worries 3dAngus.

Your tcase picture is a 218. Look at two things: output shaft requires a ujoint shaft and the case has the markings of a 218 (look at area on top front of case: smooth without ribs).

A 242 output is a splin shaft with slip yoke.

A 242 will work in a civi H1 for that is what the majority use. A 218 can work but as mentioned earlier, you will need to change some shafts and it is not as durable as the 242HD

The shipping case is for a 242 but that does not mean the contents are 242. Notice how the tcase does not fit in the shipping case. It is because the 218 is a long tcase as compared to the 242.

I've got a few 218s that were boxed in 242 containers from GL .unit turn ins when the vehicles were upgraded to the 242s. However ,Ialso have scored several new unissued, 242s from the same locations.

The 218 military unit may work in early civy hummers but the 242s need to have the"speedo housing" portion of the case changed from gear driven speedo to electronic pickup type speedo.
