Engine Cranks - No Start

The problem was no fuel but we fixed that and now there is normal cranking but it won't start. When fuel is poured into the engine through the air intake it putters a little. I am suspecting since it hasn't ran since we got it it is out of prime or the injector is bad. Any ideas Thanks.

On the top left of the fuel filter block is a little thumb wheel. On the top of the actual pump is a heavy pink wire. Unplug the pink wire and have somebody crank the engine while you bleed of air at the thumb wheel. When you get the filter block purged, plug the pink wire in and try to start it. You can crank the batteries dead with air in that fuel filter and not get it to fire.

I found out the hard way last week that the fuel gauge on my M1008 was off by 1/4 tank, this happen when it was -15 below. What a crappy way to start the day, but here's what I found out.

The manuel stated to open the drain and have someone crank the truck over until there's a stream of diesel coming out of the bleeder/port, then close it off and start it.
It sounded good but didn't work for me, I ended up loosening the top fourfuel line off the injection pump turning it over until it was wet around the fittings.
After I tightened them up it started right up, it idled a little rough but after about a minute it smoothed out and ran good.

If you run out of fuel, then yes you have to bleed the injectors. Just changing the filter you don't.

One of my son's knuckhead buddies ran his dodge pickup out of diesel fuel on the interstate. They poured 5 gallons of fuel in the tank and it wouldn't crank. They called me. I grabbed some wrenches and drove down to where they were. handed him the wrench and told him to loosen the injector line on the #6 cylinder. Cranked engine over until we got fuel.

After it was over I asked the kid if he learned anything? He said yes sir, two things. #1 - Don't run a diesel out of fuel & #2 - how to bleed the injector lines.

I told him he would remember these 2 things for a long time.
