Weather stripping - paint or not to paint

I am planing to repaint the inside of my M35a2, but the weather stripping needs to be replaced. Should I replace the weather stripping then paint or paint then put the weather stripping on?
I know the military just paints it all.

Paint will deteriorate the rubber weather stripping. Its better to paint and then install it.

Definately repaint then put on the weather stripping. Painted weatherstipping looks so nasty. Removing the old nasty stuff and replacing with new is one of the first things we do when we restore a truck.

That's what I do. A newly painted surface makes for good adhesion for the new stripping. Good luck.

The military sprays over it because they don't care about it, but painting rubber is going to make it dryrot very, very quickly. If it needs replaced you might as well tear it out and paint everything anyway. There could be flaking paint and rust underneath it that needs paint.

I am in the process of stripping my cab and there is surface rust under every rubber seal. Dry rot also and it was painted. All my new rubber will be unpainted.

where do you even get the replacement weather stripping/ seals ect for a hard cab?

from what i can see mine has lots rust under all weather stripping
need door window channel too!

Eriks supply has it and other suppliers have it also. I have seen them on ebay also. Do a screech with the part numbers.

Remove the weatherstriping first, and clean the area where it was glued down, If someone used silicone adhesive, like bath tub caulk, to try to fix it, be sure to clean off all the silicone or your paint will fish eye. If you are putting on new weatherstriping, wash the weatherstriping first with hot water. Some of the rubber weatherstriping comes with a soapy residue from being manufactured, and you will have a devil of a time trying to get it to stick to the steel unless this residue is removed. Its also a good idea to also wipe the part that gets glued down with thinner first as well. If you have a glue-down weatherstriping, use something like a plumber's solder flux brush for the adhesive - the stuff is too stiff to apply with any other kind of brush.

Any solvent that will clean up adhesive globs will also remove paint, so you want to be real careful when you brush adhesive on the rubber and on the steel. Since it's an Army truck, probably the best solution is not to worry about any globs since a small blob of glue looks a lot better than destroyed paint.
