M1009 Transmission Problem

I have a 1986 CUCV M1009 with a TH400 Transmission. I just lost reverse and 3rd gear basically the same day. Shifts into both when cold, as soon as it warms up both are gone. Any ideas on the problem?

you need to re-build it. your bands are toast and most likely you have a bad o ring in one of the clutch packs

You can get a great rebuild kit from Monster Transmissions. Whatever you do KEEP your HD th400 transmission case. These are highly sought after for there stronger case compared to a standard th400 case. Good luck and keep us posted.

I ordered a rebuilt Tranny from Jasper. 3 year, 100,000 mile warranty, I hated to dump the cash but i dont want repeated issues cropping up. Thanks for the replies guys.

You can sell that HD case on Ebay. Rock Crawlers LOVE these cases.

The CUCVs came with TH400 that has HD cases. You can see if you have one simply by looking on the top of the transmission just behind the engine. There will be a big HD in raised letters on the case.

I just had one rebuilt in one of my M1009's with a hard line cooler installed. If you don't mind asking, how much for the Jasper TH400?

Paid about $1200 in and out plus the cost of the cooler and the HD rebuild on my TH400. I love the rebuilt tranny and it will run for years I'm sure.

You just can't beat a good TH400.

Total cost for the "re-manufactured" HD TH-400 was $1400, you have to send the old transmission back as there is a $250 core charge. It worked out great in the long run and eliminated any SNAFU issues that sometimes occur with a rebuild, the bonus is the warranty - 3 year 100,000 mile.
