Fuel problem on the m1009

Well fellas, I have quite a dilemma. The rig will not easily start on her own without help from a tiny shot of ether. Till it gets the shot, it cranks and cranks and puffs white smoke, but wont fire. After the tiny shot, it runs fine and starts fine until it cools down. We are thinking it has to be pressure leak somewhere in the fuel system. We have checked the glow plugs, replaced the fuel pump, and made sure there were no pin holes in the fuel lines to the pump. We replaced the "original" filter base with the one from our civy GMC. We are stumped as to where to look next. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

If you glow plugs are working then this is only a matter of time:

Maybe a little shot of ether would help the old girl come back to life. Gave her a little burp of ether, walked around and got in. Waited until the yellow light went out and hit the starter. Rev rev rev BANG!!! Crunch!! Crunch!!! Bang!!!

Since no boom perhaps your glow plugs are not working. Did you follow the TM when checking them? What ohm reading did you get on each one?

Agree with mistaken1. There is a very good reason there is a warning under the hood about not using starting fluids. When they hit the hot glow plugs, ignition takes place no matter what position the piston is in. This can bend a connecting rod etc.

It is only safe to use starting fluid on a glow plug engine if you are 100% sure the glow plug system is inoperative or disabled. Even then, I wouldn't do it and would look for some other way to start the engine.

The white smoke is unburnt fuel. The starting fluid does not purge air from the fuel lines. so your problem is ether mechanical as low compression or its the glow plugs and or controller. Also could be related wiring. If the glow plug controller is bypassed and the glow plugs are run off a switch the plugs are most likely burnt out.

Good luck with your repair

Well, we tested the glow plugs with an Ohm-meter, and they read 1 Ohm, which would indicate that they are good. Something else is causing this.

You need to check the connectors at the plugs, power to the GP relay and power out of the relay.

We aren't trying to argue with you. It is just that white smoke while cranking means fuel to the cylinders and running and driving once started means everything else is ok. That leaves glow plug system or starter motor speed. How fast is it turning over?
