Cross country relay challenge.

Okay so I am putting out feelers for people interested in a challenging relay from Sacramento CA to Southbury CT.

Here is the deal. you would need at least an m35a2 or A3 or larger because the load is matched to that size truck. I am planning to fly out and accompany the shipment back, acting as a second driver. This shipment is perishable and must complete the 2800 mile trip in 72 hrs tops. I will accept people along the route willing to relay the load any distance, but will choose the people willing to go the longest distance to reduce the number of transfers to the next truck. This would happen in May of 2012.

So here is the kicker. The load is 500 3 lb packages of honey bees, so basically several zillion bees Hence me accompanying it in case of problems. I am thinking in terms of an alternative to me driving my truck out there and back. I will pay for fuel, food and your time of course.

It would be all ex-military trucks doing the hauling, and of course we would take pics and keeps the site posted on our progress.

I fully expect this to cost me what freight would, difference being I can't manage the bees by riding along with the freight company.

It will be a great adventure for those with the stomach for it... if you don't have the stomach for it, you don't have to respond.

Hmm, good excuse to win a truck on the west coast and drive your honey bees homes. I'd use that reason to add to my motorpool

If you can't win a truck then win a M105A2. Then all you'd have to do is transfer the trailer and any 3/4 ton pickup should pull it

That actually hadn't even occurred to me, great idea to keep in mind.

Then I would only need a second driver.

With all the bee attacks lately with the African bees would make me think twice about the trip, Nd bringing a "new" bred to the east coast. Just saying.

But it would be a fun trip

If they are perishable, I wouldn't do it in a M35. There is a pretty good chance you will have some kind of maintenance delay on that long of a trip.

Why would you just put them on a airplane. If anything went wrong their Insurance would cover it. I guess over east they are out of bees.

No new breed crossing the country, there are only a couple of breeds in the country and 29 ish family lines. The borders are sealed to new importation and the USDA has strict regulation on interstate bee transport. All bees have USDA health certs.

There are no Africanized honey bees in northern California. I get them on the west coast because they are there for almond pollination. The majority of bees in this country are always on the road headed for the next crop.

Death by bees.. Man that would suck. upon this route will there be safety gear and mosquito nets? Foggers? That will need to be transported as well? Or they stored in the make shift hives with the Queen? I am very curious.. Kreg

they are in screened cages. I will have a bee suit with me, no netting of any kind. They cant get out sort of the truck rolling over or something.

Here is a suggestion......buy a school bus in CA......they are ususally well maintained and sell cheap......take out most of the seats and put a barrier between the "cargo area" to prevent the bees from getting to the driver in case of a leakage.

You can drive non-stop and the drivers will have a place to rest while not behind the wheel. Plenty of room for a cooler, sleeping area, commo equip, etc.

When you get back to CT you can sell the bus and recoup part of your cost.

Not that the MV idea isn't cool....but a bus will run faster and ride a lot better than a deuce or trailer.

Just my thoughts for what they're worth.

So, this is kinda an intro and a "i'm interested" post.

Just picking up my 1st duece in couple weeks and i not only like driving, i kinda like bees - or at least the raw honey - great for allergies and sinus probs here in "sinus valley" ohio.... Seriously

Assume you're coming by way of dayton which is my neck of the woods.

Not sure what you're looking for at this time but i can drive a leg. Or at least would like to be on a keep me posted list.

Curious your thoughts on transferring the load along the way....
