engine trouble

let me start by saying I took my m1009 on a 4hr trip two days ago. I had a trailer in tow the whole way truck ran great. Way home towards the end I started to notice the engine seemed a bit louder. But I just figured it was due to the engine being hot and oil was thinner.

She seems fine at idle its only when you rev her up do you notice the noise.

When I started it yesterday it was way louder then normal. no loss of power just real loud. Could it be timing ??
or do I need to start looking for a new engine

What type of noise? Roaring, whining, clunking, dinging, clanging, howling, etc..
Also, have you tried to pinpoint it? It could be very serious, but sounds like since it hasn't lost any power that it is probably something simple. Let's hope it's something simple. Raise the hood and, in "park" and with the parking brake set, have someone give it some throttle and you snoop around under the hood and see if you can tell where it's coming from. Stay clear of the fan and belts! Let us know if you notice anything so we can maybe help you determine what it might be.

They are loudest when the fast idle and timing advance is activated(cold start).

Doghead it even louder then that cold start. After it warms past 160 its still louder then usual

sounds like bad bearings to me but its so hard to tell with the diesel clanking
its an awful metal clanging. So loud it brought my wife out of the house to ask what was wrong.

I had to replace a broken valve spring when I got my M1009 from GL. It sounded like an engine knock a bit, got louder when the engine revved, and there didn't seem to be any power loss.

One more simple test........start it up, put in in fwd, reverse, neutral, etc. Note if it makes a difference in the sound while sitting still in each gear with the brake on. It could be in your torque converter or flexplate. A bad or loose converter will sound like the whole thing's about to come apart. In either case, don't drive it til you find the culprit and get 'er fixed.

I use a screwdriver, hold solid contact with the tip to whatever I want to listen(inside of) and put the plastic handle in my ear.

Pin-pointing

Just checked Harbor Freight, they still sell the Mechanic's Stethoscope, on sale for $2.99 each (Harbor Freight item #41966) I have one I've had over 5 years now, and it has helped me tremendously in pin-pointing noises on engines, etc. They're not the most comfortable but they drown out ambient noise pretty well and you'll find what you're listening for with them. For that price you can get next day delivery and still be money ahead. Just something that may help you out.

ps--the garden hose and screwdriver are tried and true methods also!
edit: just re-checked--they're $2.00 each.

ok so I started it up today and it sounds ok?? This is the second time this has happened I also noticed when the engine was pinging and clanking it was also smoking pretty bad black smoke. So my next question could it be bad injectors or could it be out of timing? not real familar with timing a diesel or even how to adjust it. Could it be a early sign of injection pump going bad??

I dont want to take it to a mechanic cause we all know what happens there... dont know any good diesel mechanics around me.

If it was making black smoke at idle, that means fuel injector stuck almost all the time. Narrow down which side was smoking. Then use a 3/4 open end to loosen the lines at each injector on that side with the engine running. It will make a mess, so don't do it inside your garage or anything. Watch the black smoke. If it stops when you do one of the injectors, you just found your problem.

pretty sure my injectors are bad. From what I have read and my Truck does have 115000miles on it
