What I've done lately:

The short version - got my M1097R running!

The long version (for those who want more details):
Purchased on auction Feb. 5th, EUC approved 5 days later, delivered 2 weeks later.
GovPlanet inspection said "cranks but doesn't start."
I'm a computer nerd, not a mechanic, but I can follow a technical manual and y'all's knowledge is incredible!
The troubleshooting process:
- checked all fluids & diesel
- disconnected fuel breather (still crank no start)
- installed grounding harness
- removed fuel cap; no hissing/pop (still crank no start)
- pressurized fuel tank; crank and coughed a bit... but no start
- checked fuel bleeder; vacuum-pulled fuel through to filter/bleeder (still crank no start)
- checked resistance in all glow plugs, replaced one glow plug
- replaced one return fuel hose that appeared crimped
- neighbor (retired army mechanic) came over, questioned my sanity, then did a few checks (5 minutes, if that) and diagnosed that the fuel pump was out.
- replaced fuel pump
- replaced fuel filter and separator, added pressure gauge to fuel separator (still crank no start, but fuel pressure reading 7psi)
- jumpered S & T pin connectors on STE/ICE port (still crank no start)
- removed, disassembled, cleaned & reinstalled check valve on return fuel line (still crank no start)
---- by the way, if you reinstall it backwards you lose all fuel pressure. Yep.
- removed top cover on fuel injection pump, lubed metering valve with WD-40 and filled chamber with "Mechanic in a Bottle" and left for 4 hours (still crank no start)
- discovered that I had inserted fuel actuator wire 54A cockeyed and it was not fuel actuating. I plugged it in correctly.

IT STARTED! Rough initially and required about three starts, then idled steadily - loud, obnoxious and glorious!

Big thanks to all of y'all! I have been scouring this forum and everything in this list was from your experiences and tech manual troubleshooting.

Good AM. Update on my 1097. Installed new mirrors hood latch, Vacuumed it out found lots of practice rounds and 1 Beawolf empty casing cool find. I’m waiting for my inspection pump to arrive. And I ordered intake manifold gaskets to come in Autozone keeps canceling my order not sure why. And after all that comes in I can start my fluid changing. I picked up a M1102 to accompany it.

Added park parts to my 3 speed transmission and modified a 4 speed shifter to work with it. With the "1" notch welded up on the 4 speed detent, and the next notch ramped to push into drive, everything moves up a notch and lines up with the transmission detents perfectly. The 3 speed indicator also lines up, just had to drill a new hole for the wire. I know where park is so I don't really care that there's no letter 😂

New to me BFG Baja. 2017 date code no cracks. Static balanced out with 2oz surprisingly.
Yes, newer tires in plan just not immediately. Prior tire looked like the Grand Canyon between the tread blocks.

I have the BFG’s with similar date codes on my M1151A1 and love them. Great tires that are quiet(er) than the MTR’s and smooth running with the Centramatics.

I installed a new voltage regulator and I took my M1165 for a drive! I love that truck so much! I am hearing turbo whistle from my wicked turbo wheel and I think I feel some power increase from turning the ip up. I need to figure out the ac that was working and isn’t working now. I ordered door locks for my X-Doors and I should get them next week and I can install my doors! I’m motivated about my truck. I ordered new old tires and wheels from Feltz! I was really happy with my last set for my m1123

Hey guys what is the proper name for the tool to install the black packard plugs shell connector what ever you want to call them. On our vehicles. I have been using regular wiring crimp tool seems to work. But in tight space it’s a pain. Thank you

I think there have been a few models over the years. This is what I found recently and at a descent price.

I often wonder why I subject myself to abuse trying to fix things I don't have a lot of experience fixing? I have been struggling to fix the HMMWV AC system.

After replacing every single AC component in the AC system, some multiple times, it would blow cold for about 5 minutes and then hot again.

I was about to surrender and find someone local to fix the possessed AC system. Problem are, no one want to work on a HMMWV, or no one wants to work on a an AC system cobbled together by the prior owner, or work on something made out of Chinesium.

So I was back to trying to fix it myself one more time.

And I think I finally discovered the issue. During this series of disasters, and wasting $, I replaced the original (to me) receiver dryer. The original receiver dryer had two fittings, one marked in. No other marking on it. So when I replaced the receiver dryer, I could not find the exact one as it had no part numbers, no model number, nadda.

I took some pictures and sent them to an AC supply guy and he gave me a part number that he looked close. But it was not exactly the same size. It also had no markings except "in" on one port.

I assume that if I connect the "in port" to the same hose, all would be good. NO!

Turns out, and I did not know this, certain receiver dryers can be installed backwards, in to out hose, out to in hose, and they will work just fine. Apparently, this was the the case with the original receiver dryer, but not the case with the replacements!

After really looking hard at AC diagram drawing, I discovered it was originally installed backwards, and I continued that with the replacements, but the replacement would NOT work backwards and actually screwed up downstream components.

So it goes High Side Compressor --> Input of Condenser --> Output of Condenser --> Input of Receiver Dryer --> Output of Receiver Dryer --> Input to Evap (Expansion value) --> output of evap --> low side of Compressor. The "in" port is from the compressor high side via the condenser, not from the evap.

So the lesson: Never assume the Rig was left properly assembled just because it worked and blindly follow the part markings when you replace parts!
