What I've done lately:

The short version - got my M1097R running!

The long version (for those who want more details):
Purchased on auction Feb. 5th, EUC approved 5 days later, delivered 2 weeks later.
GovPlanet inspection said "cranks but doesn't start."
I'm a computer nerd, not a mechanic, but I can follow a technical manual and y'all's knowledge is incredible!
The troubleshooting process:
- checked all fluids & diesel
- disconnected fuel breather (still crank no start)
- installed grounding harness
- removed fuel cap; no hissing/pop (still crank no start)
- pressurized fuel tank; crank and coughed a bit... but no start
- checked fuel bleeder; vacuum-pulled fuel through to filter/bleeder (still crank no start)
- checked resistance in all glow plugs, replaced one glow plug
- replaced one return fuel hose that appeared crimped
- neighbor (retired army mechanic) came over, questioned my sanity, then did a few checks (5 minutes, if that) and diagnosed that the fuel pump was out.
- replaced fuel pump
- replaced fuel filter and separator, added pressure gauge to fuel separator (still crank no start, but fuel pressure reading 7psi)
- jumpered S & T pin connectors on STE/ICE port (still crank no start)
- removed, disassembled, cleaned & reinstalled check valve on return fuel line (still crank no start)
---- by the way, if you reinstall it backwards you lose all fuel pressure. Yep.
- removed top cover on fuel injection pump, lubed metering valve with WD-40 and filled chamber with "Mechanic in a Bottle" and left for 4 hours (still crank no start)
- discovered that I had inserted fuel actuator wire 54A cockeyed and it was not fuel actuating. I plugged it in correctly.

IT STARTED! Rough initially and required about three starts, then idled steadily - loud, obnoxious and glorious!

Big thanks to all of y'all! I have been scouring this forum and everything in this list was from your experiences and tech manual troubleshooting.

Good AM. Update on my 1097. Installed new mirrors hood latch, Vacuumed it out found lots of practice rounds and 1 Beawolf empty casing cool find. I’m waiting for my inspection pump to arrive. And I ordered intake manifold gaskets to come in Autozone keeps canceling my order not sure why. And after all that comes in I can start my fluid changing. I picked up a M1102 to accompany it.

Added park parts to my 3 speed transmission and modified a 4 speed shifter to work with it. With the "1" notch welded up on the 4 speed detent, and the next notch ramped to push into drive, everything moves up a notch and lines up with the transmission detents perfectly. The 3 speed indicator also lines up, just had to drill a new hole for the wire. I know where park is so I don't really care that there's no letter 😂

got the SECM body moved from the 998 to the 1097, dont think the truck squatted any when the new body sat on.

Still need to remove seat boxes, leaving left side seat box for now until someone can tell me where the tcm is supposed to mount with this body in place.

New to me BFG Baja. 2017 date code no cracks. Static balanced out with 2oz surprisingly.
Yes, newer tires in plan just not immediately. Prior tire looked like the Grand Canyon between the tread blocks.

I have the BFG’s with similar date codes on my M1151A1 and love them. Great tires that are quiet(er) than the MTR’s and smooth running with the Centramatics.
