What I've done lately:
The short version - got my M1097R running!
The long version (for those who want more details):
Purchased on auction Feb. 5th, EUC approved 5 days later, delivered 2 weeks later.
GovPlanet inspection said "cranks but doesn't start."
I'm a computer nerd, not a mechanic, but I can follow a technical manual and y'all's knowledge is incredible!
The troubleshooting process:
- checked all fluids & diesel
- disconnected fuel breather (still crank no start)
- installed grounding harness
- removed fuel cap; no hissing/pop (still crank no start)
- pressurized fuel tank; crank and coughed a bit... but no start
- checked fuel bleeder; vacuum-pulled fuel through to filter/bleeder (still crank no start)
- checked resistance in all glow plugs, replaced one glow plug
- replaced one return fuel hose that appeared crimped
- neighbor (retired army mechanic) came over, questioned my sanity, then did a few checks (5 minutes, if that) and diagnosed that the fuel pump was out.
- replaced fuel pump
- replaced fuel filter and separator, added pressure gauge to fuel separator (still crank no start, but fuel pressure reading 7psi)
- jumpered S & T pin connectors on STE/ICE port (still crank no start)
- removed, disassembled, cleaned & reinstalled check valve on return fuel line (still crank no start)
---- by the way, if you reinstall it backwards you lose all fuel pressure. Yep.
- removed top cover on fuel injection pump, lubed metering valve with WD-40 and filled chamber with "Mechanic in a Bottle" and left for 4 hours (still crank no start)
- discovered that I had inserted fuel actuator wire 54A cockeyed and it was not fuel actuating. I plugged it in correctly.
IT STARTED! Rough initially and required about three starts, then idled steadily - loud, obnoxious and glorious!
Big thanks to all of y'all! I have been scouring this forum and everything in this list was from your experiences and tech manual troubleshooting.
