Big problems - my shaking was a broken crankshaft!

So, here's my plan: I'm picking up the new engine this week - a low mileage 6.5 with all the accessories already on it. I'm going to order all of the maintenance items on this "new" engine - new belt, hoses, balancer, glow plugs, PCV, various sensors, and maybe a water pump and fan clutch. I...

Big problems - my shaking was a broken crankshaft!

But drilling a dowel would require also carving a channel to accept the dowel in the balancer and I'm just not skilled enough for that. I do agree that your suggestion would work, however. I also plan on loading it up with Loctite when I install the balancer, hopefully to make it more...

Big problems - my shaking was a broken crankshaft!

So, I attempted a repair with JB Weld hi-temp steel paste. This is only to get me out of the garage and into a qualified shop for the engine swap. I am still installing the new OEM balancer, pulley, and new crank bolt.

Big problems - my shaking was a broken crankshaft!

I agree it's an easy swap, but in Florida (the sunny place for shady people) I'm getting $10,000 labor quotes and that's if I supply the engine.

Big problems - my shaking was a broken crankshaft!

So I started a new thread to illuminate the importance of checking "shake" in Humvees. This was my first so I assumed it was normal. I removed my crank pulley and harmonic balancer this weekend, which by the way was a beeotch. Once removed I noticed the key channel was intact only toward the...

    6.2 or 6.5 - What's really better?

I'll know tuesday or so, whether or not I buy it. I notified someone on the forum that I'll let them know if I don't as he wants it. I'm happy with my engine, however it's not in the "prettiest" condition. I'm nearly done doing a light resto on the truck and it pretty much looks new now and...

    6.2 or 6.5 - What's really better?

Ok, it's confirmed that I have the 6.2 in my 1994 Humvee. I understand the campaign that existed to upgrade the in-service 6.2s to 6.5s and 1994 was the last year to require it. Mine was never done. From what I understand there is a small increase in HP and torque and it is a "smoother"...

6.2 Motor Chirp - may be pulley bearing or vibration squeak

Yup, I checked that. Looks good. The slight lateral movement of the crank pulley I think is a dead giveaway in this case. Let's hope it's solved!

6.2 Motor Chirp - may be pulley bearing or vibration squeak

Thanks everybody for your guidance. I just ordered the dampener, the pulley and the crankcase seal. All OEM. This in addition to all new belts should show an improvement. Also an input seal for one of my front hubs - starting to weap.

6.2 Motor Chirp - may be pulley bearing or vibration squeak

It's the pulley at the crank. It's definitely wobbly, and the noise sounds like it's coming from there. Also, I revved the engine up a bit to 1K rpm and BOY DOES IT SHAKE! Sounds like the hamonic balancer? If this is indeed where the issue is, what are all the parts that I should replace...

6.2 Motor Chirp - may be pulley bearing or vibration squeak

Also, I looked at all the pulleys while running today and all of them are smooth, except for the main pulley at the crank - the one with 4 belts at the bottom. It seems to wobble very, very slightly. May be an optical illusion but it's noticeable. Do these fail and when they do, will they...

6.2 Motor Chirp - may be pulley bearing or vibration squeak

Thank you for the reply! I have the older 6.2, so I have V belts, not a serpentine. I'm going to investigate further this afternoon. I'm wondering if anyone knows if the harmonic balancer or any bearings next to the crank are known to fail. It seems to me I'd hear "something" if I gave it...

6.2 Motor Chirp - may be pulley bearing or vibration squeak

My HMMWV is nearly restored and fully sorted. Enjoying it every day. However, I've now run into another bug: There is now a low RPM chirp coming from the engine area. It chirps at every revolution, so I do not think it's a belt (belts rotate slower due to size so I've seen most belt chirps...

Starter Motor Bolts - Which Ones?

Ok my new HMMWV broke down on Friday. The starter bolts went snaparoo, leaving the threaded studs in the block. A quick drill out and replacement was easy. HOWEVER: There are numerous threads and surplus e-tailers selling "updated" bolts. The bolts in the descriptions do not match what read...

    New M998 Owner - White-Blue Smoke

OK, quick update on the blue smoke thing. I replaced the cold advance valve (mentioned above) and now the PCV. After driving for a day, the smoke was gone! No more startup smoke. However, just after I told everyone I knew about the fix, the smoke came back last night. Cold start, and there...

lol I meant once I start it to back it out of the garage.

    New M998 Owner - White-Blue Smoke

Ok, I just had the cold advance sensor replaced. This WASN'T easy! It was fused. Had to soak in PB Blaster then use a blowtorch. New one is now installed. It seems to have helped but I'll know for sure when I start it in the garage. Here's the only troubling result - of course, the coolant...

    New M998 Owner - White-Blue Smoke

Yes, the wait light comes on when cold for about that amount of time. Flashes before a hot start, as expected.

    New M998 Owner - White-Blue Smoke

Actually, I'm replacing quite a few parts anyway. I'm in the process of repainting, new doors, top, all new decals, lights, 12 volt converter, etc, etc. The parts are cheap so, without any records, I'd rather just be safe with new parts than sorry. Hopefully, this will solve the problem.

    New M998 Owner - White-Blue Smoke

I'm not sure what oil is in it. It is black (not what I'm used to fixing exotic cars), but the consistency feels good. In other words, no viscosity breakdown so I'm assuming it's recent. What oil should I use? I can refer to the manuals but I figured enthusiasts with experience know best.
