What have you done to your HMMWV today/lately

Could try a soft slant back, if you've got a soft top rig. (shameless plug) https://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?177381-HMMWV-4-Man-Soft-Slant-Backs-and-Frames&highlight= I don't have any in stock at the moment, but can make one relatively quick (end of month or so). I'm half way done...

    Vibration when hit 32 mph

The others have covered it. I was going to say hubs, control arms, crossmember, or propellor shafts, but other beat me to it. Am replying to subscribe and see what solution you end up at, hopefully. Best of luck. Bulldogger

88 M998 leaking front Axel shaft

Agree with draining and opening the inspection cover. New gear oil isn't expensive and it tells you more than peeking in through another access port. Be sure to get the anaerobic sealant recommended, for the inspection cover seal. It's available at auto parts stores from Permatex and others...

88 M998 leaking front Axel shaft

The advice given me when my first boot (two now) cracked was to just surf around and find a good cheap surplus NOS half shaft and replace the entire thing. The logic being that it takes MUCh longer to disassemble a half shaft to replace just a boot. I took that advice and am glad I did. I can...

Will-do. It’s holding for now. I made it to the dump and back w my M101, and I didn’t need an Uber home... Bulldogger

What have you done to your HMMWV today/lately

It’s starting to be one of those weeks... I don’t know if I should be glad that I have been able to spare the time for all these repairs, or if I should be angry that what I thought was a vacation for mostly gardening and homework has turned into nothing but humvee maintenance. For those...

Welding done Now to put everything back and dog the u joint bolts down tight! Mobile welder did a nice job and good man to talk to. Wasn’t cheap of course, but much easier than pulling the drive train. Bdgr

What have you done to your HMMWV today/lately

What did I do today? I knocked a hole in my transfer case! Replaced the front drive shaft’s u-joints and the rear most one came undone and smacked the t case good. A young Marine who introduced himself as a HMMWV mechanic stopped by to check on me while waiting for the tow and said “yeah, gen...

Inexpensive HMMWV Fuel Tank Drain Plug Replacement

Mine is still holding but I can tell it is very corroded. I’m going to buy the correct part and get it replaced. It is certainly a good temporary fix.

Can I just weld a glow plug hole shut

I second using a thread chaser. If someone could tell us the thread size and pitch, these chasers can be had at some hardware stores, Sears, even Amazon. They typically aren't expensive, I bought a set from Sears' online site "Shop you way" or something like that. Much prefer the thought of...

    Graves Mountain Rally August 30 - September 3, 2018

I’ll subscribe as well. Will look at schedules to see if we can make one of the May dates. Likely we can come for the 4th. Bulldogger

    Well shoot! 6-Bolt vs 4-Bolt Crank/Flywheel

I have no direct experience with the CCKW platform but I second the suggestions to redrill. A good machinist won't blink an eye at welding, heat treating, and redrilling something like that It won't necessarily be cheap, unless you know one, so be prepared to ask around and speak to a few...

Specifically, which TM's should I go over for PM Services

The operators manual, -10 and the Lube Order are a good place for PM. There isn’t really any in the repair manual -34, it’s for repairs when something goes wrong. Do the entire lube order, including open and inspects of hubs and so forth, if you’re not certain these have been done recently. If...

Clunk when shifting between drive and reverse, or vice versa

Thanks. I couldn't find a path to remove the shaft rearward on mine, though I was trying from the position of laying at about the halfway point, maybe slightly forward, so maybe I couldn't see/feel it. I have a crossmember that joins the sides of my frame located about 12" in front of my TC...

Clunk when shifting between drive and reverse, or vice versa

The prize goes to those who urged me to check the u-joints. It turns out it's a little bit of everything. The front most u-joint was in active decline, slapping back and forth maybe 15 degrees back and forth. Ready to fail. Glad we spotted it. I noticed the carrier bearing was clunky too...

    New to me Humvee

Welcome! I am partial to the gen 1 HMMWV's too, having one as my only experience with green iron. That vintage should also have another MWO for the improved parking brake. You could google that and check yours. The upgraded parking brake functions better. It was an MWO many many years ago...

M998 half door from PA/VA to SC

+1, I'm close to Belvoir and plan to go to Graves Mountain this year again in September. Long time to wait for some though, I know. BDGR

    Bendix gear

I'd agree to check that first, as it's also a very easy fix to do. I had an old straight-6 Firebird that crudded up the solenoid with annoying regularity. I got very good at removing it without disturbing the starter and taking them apart for cleaning. Just a bad location/design on that model...

    Source for 6TL Battery

I'm having good results with my Advance Auto (yes, I know) Group 31's in a HMMWV. Part of the reason I bought them is the convenience of having AA two blocks away and I know the clerks fairly well, in case I had problems. I made a desulfating charger and did all kind of other tricks and...
