By the time you muck around with trying to 'fix' the cracked block. you've pissed away time & money. When I worked for ______ & we we're remanufacturing the 6.X motors, close to 80% of the core blocks we took in were junk & we'd simply use new blocks.
We had a special insert that we'd put into...
3-53. Loud. Heavy.
Did I mention that they are loud & heavy engines? :-D
There are better, more recent diesel options available - question is, how much do you want to spend? Do you want to stay gas powered, or look at an oil-burner motor swap?

HOWEVER; if you are replacing one busted cylinder head on an engine, it needs to match the other head on the engine, in regards to valve sizes, chamber size, etc...

The valve sizes used have absolutely nothing to do with cracking blocks. Nothing. Nada. Zilch.
The blocks are same (to my knowledge) between C-code & J-code 6.2 engines. Differences were in the heads & tuning, maybe cams; I'm too lazy to dig into it any further to find out.
All 6.2/6.5 blocks...
Every post/article I've ever read mentions moving the radiator forward to install the 251 in the M37 & variants... at minimum, moving it to front side of brace.

There are a number of choices to use behind the 6.2/6.5 motors, like the SM465, but I'd recommend going to an overdrive 5-speed transmission if you stay with the stock 5.83 final drive ratio in order to have decent road speed -

I didn't suggest the 4BT conversion; I mentioned that it's a pricey option & a good bit of effort.
doin can drop in the 318, but fuel mileage will still suck. If he's new to the truck, I'd recommend fixing up what he has now & getting the brakes, steering up to snuff, then look into engine...
I have scoured various news sources & EPA site, but don't see any requirements for changes to civvy diesels... anyone else see any rule changes that would affect older civilian diesel MV's?
Anyone? Bueller?

...and availability of cast steel 318 cover is? Just re-read the instructions that Ray posted & there's a lot of adaptation & machine work involved in adapting the M37 transmission. Uglytruckling's kit used the 318/360 bellhousing & many custom bits to adapt the NP420/435 trans - it doesn't...
Another option to consider is a built & balanced 230 or 251 with a 5-speed overdrive manual transmission behind it - or consider swapping in a late model Jeep straight 6 & corresponding transmission. 4BT Cummins makes a nice swap, but it isn't cheap; 6BT swap is even more of a challenge with the...
...not to be a smarta**, but another 230 is the easiest swap.
What are you looking to do with the truck? Parade queen? Fun toy? Daily-driver?
Where in NC are you located?
