LDS VS LDT and the real differences

Jason, I think that's a really good point re: common modes of engine failure. Inexpensive stuff to enhance longevity include carefully balancing the rotating assembly, removing stress from the rods (polishing them), changing to ARP bolts and studs for the main caps, increased air intake flow...

LDS VS LDT and the real differences

And polish the rods to remove the stress risers guys! I've built many an engine on a budget -- e.g. street racer's budget. Simple way to drastically increase rod strength is careful use of a grinder and polishing wheel. The get ARP studs and you've probably doubled rod strength. Street...

LDS VS LDT and the real differences

Sorry, I'm just buying that these aren't diesel engines. 22:1 compression is high for a turbocharged engine but not THAT high. And my NA 6.5L GM/Detroit diesel has 21.5:1 compression. The unusual swirl chamber is a bit different and appears to be what gives it long-burn characteristics which...

Do we have an official Bobbed Deuce picture thread? If not, here it is! Post em!

Boy, I'll second that! Really nice looking truck -- very close to the original XM381 prototype 2-ton 4x4. hornet

LDS VS LDT and the real differences

Tom, I think you will agree that doing things like polishing and balancing rods, deburring everything inside the engine to promote oil drain, carefully blueprinting the engine during rebuild, etc. -- all the kind of stuff that Smoky Yunick did way back in The Day can't possibly hurt and will...

LDS VS LDT and the real differences

Before any body jumps my butt -- I realize I have NOT gotten to the end of this thread yet. However Travis' comments need a comment or two, to whit: As I read the thread to this point there IS a lower compression black-topped piston that is a late replacement piston for the LDS. The LDS has...

So what is the true HP out of the LDT-465-1C?

Thinking about this some more it seems to me that the way to really help a multifuel engine make more usable power without reducing compression ratio would be to use a Whipple/Paxton type supercharger rather than a turbo. This would increase torque and air flow at low rpms and eliminate...

So what is the true HP out of the LDT-465-1C?

I haven't seen a copy of that book in years and would love to HAVE a copy. Yep, the textbooks are the way to go but getting help from others who are also less enlightened doesn't confuse things too badly IMO. I seriously doubt anyone is trying to mislead and everyone should take everything...

So what is the true HP out of the LDT-465-1C?

If the last part of your response was meant for me, that's precisely what I've been doing -- reading up the various threads which mention "hypercycle". I'll go back to my knitting and reading now but I do try to not ask questions which are easily answered. That said, have you noticed how large...

So what is the true HP out of the LDT-465-1C?

Just right amount of information and the critical piece I was missing -- the fuel density compensator. The cupped pistons I was aware of. Cummins marine engines have deep cups and will tolerate plenty of alternate fuels such as WMO and jet fuel. As the fuel density gets lighter various fuels'...

So what is the true HP out of the LDT-465-1C?

I found 68 odd hits just searching for "hypercycle" using the SS search engine. I've got my chores cut out for me. Didn't have any idea what the devil I should be looking for. Still very new to SS and MVs in general (not counting 30 years of Land Rovers). THANKS!!

So what is the true HP out of the LDT-465-1C?

high output LDT 465 Why would lowering the compression slightly, installing studs for the mains, changing to a larger waste gated turbo, maybe getting Carillo or somebody to make custom rods, and similar mods to an LDT change it from a multifuel engine?? Why can these engines burn multiple...

    Cat 3116 running vmo

Thanks for this post. I've been considering changing my 3116 for a Cummins 6BTA at about 270hp for better power, fuel mileage, and road speed. You have given me the last reason I needed to convince myself it is worth the effort to change the engine and probably tranny (either a 3053A or G56-AE...

    Air Conditioning a Deuce

I'll second Tom's comment about the Gates Greenstripe belts! They are sometimes hard to find but very much worth the effort. There's not much wrap on the gen pulley - there really needs to be at least 40% wrap for a high load like a generator/alternator.

Compatible transmissions for the M35a3 with the cat 3116

According to the TM some are equipped with AT545 and some with AT1545. Other than that I do not know for sure.

Compatible transmissions for the M35a3 with the cat 3116

Gear Venders makes a planetary geared 0.78:1 overdrive which is pretty short, 12.5" I think, that might work pretty well with a bobbed 4x4 A3 if the wheelbase is 140-150". http://www.gearvendors.com If you're bobber's rear axle is in the same position as the intermediate tandem axle of a 6x6 I...

Compatible transmissions for the M35a3 with the cat 3116

Michelin XZL 395/85R20 max road speed I haven't finished this entire thread so somebody may have already answered the question. There is a memo from Michelin which approves the 395/85R20 tires for use to 70 mph under MRAPs and lists the loads vs inflation pressure.

Compatible transmissions for the M35a3 with the cat 3116

Marine 6BTs are a common marine engine. The SAE#3 bell housing is a common marine bellhousing -- yes a bellhousing is available.

RPM vs Speed vs Tire size

Simpler as long as you know what lurks inside the gear ratio and radius and "correction factor." More useful for me to know the details and get the right answer and KNOW it's the right answer. Personal preference I s'pose. And if you know what is in the details it's easy to change the...

RPM vs Speed vs Tire size

I would very much like to know more about these wheels! I have a friend in Calgary that can probably help me get some if I just know what I'm looking for. I'm sending email so you have my address. I'm thinking to run 11.00s on a bobbed 4x4 with duals in rear much like the original XM381 2-ton...
