I've heard that it's really hit or miss depending on who you talk to. Sounds like another "opinion" without any basis in actual regulations. Maybe the best course of action would be to try other CHP stations until you find a "reasonable" opinion, rather than trying to argue the point with facts...
Sorry for delay, was offline for a bit. No particular reason, it just seemed easier to do it that way. Overall, it turned out well. Haven't had a chance to get some actual measurements, but so far sounds a lot quieter.
Starting to insulate the cab (aka the 94 dB EZ Bake Oven), starting with Lizard Skin sound control; ceramic insulation next week for heat, then some Dynamat hood liner. The Lizard Skin is easy to apply, and easy to clean up (water based). So far, seems to really work based on just a "tap test"...
(Hat tip brokeoverland.com). Keeping track on the bolt torque sequence (from the tech manual). Tape on the tire was for the 20 bolts holding the rim halves together. After putting the wheel on the hub, just moved tape marks 1-10 onto the hub for the ten lug nut sequence. After hitting the torque...
Great to meet you at lunch yesterday with Scott; welcome aboard and good luck on your trip! Keep us posted and we'll be your "ground crew" for support!
@tacosauce You underway again on four round wheels? When you get to CA, will you be coming in via I-8/I-5, or across by I-10? If you're taking the southern route, would be glad to meet you along the way in SD county.

Smaller turnout, but definitely a good day trip. Thanks to Dennis and crew for hosting and for great hospitality! Plans are in the works for a future event; hoping to find some more local SS to join in.
Found some other helpful threads, may be useful when making the case with local/state government:
49 CFR 571 exempts military vehicles from FMVSS (its does NOT say that they aren't built to those standards, as misrepresented by the MD DMV). However, they are governed by MIL-STD-1180B, which...
Thanks for the find from MD, Reworked. Interesting literary gymnastics they're doing:
"A study conducted on general public use of special purpose military vehicles...has identified that these special purpose military vehicles are not constructed to meet 49 CFR 571 Federal Motor Vehicle Safety...
I agree with SJ's points. Definitely seeing multiple US states changing their positions on this. Question for everyone here - has anyone captured/documented any of their rationale for doing this? Is it a highway safety issue? Environmental issues? Or, just because they can? Usually regulations...
Greatly appreciate the heads up from @Duckworthe; knew this was probably coming after our last meetup. Has anyone in CA seen anything in "writing" on this yet? I've won some battles in the past against bureaucrats citing their opinions with the force of law with the (extremely persistent)...
