Guyfang,
Been off the grid for several days but back to home base now. Will be doing an "autopsy" of the damage with a goal to identify the burned cables (or at least their pin connection points on the cannon plugs since all the insulation is burned off). Also will be taking a closer look...
Bad, bad news....aua
After swapping out the K1 relay and restarting the unit I immediately got a short circuit fault and instant shutdown. (At least the stop solenoid functioned properly but now I might have a parts unit.) This is painful after spending so much time in solving one problem...
Well, good to hear from you stranger! Happy to see you're still helping folks out. I will be very careful about re-installing to top cover having read about the possibility of an overspeed when the arm is placed on the wrong side of the linkage. What I've been doing is landing the cover a...
Thanks--I remember seeing a fuel squirt coming out the small relief hole but it wasn't much. I'll do some more cleaning in that area.
I haven't gotten to the solenoid swap out, but will do that tonight. Unit still does not want to shut down with the solenoid, but only manually.
Greetings to everyone. Been away for a few years, mostly working away from home, but now back for awhile and trying to give some attention to a few languishing MEPs.
For this one, it's 1977 vintage unit showing signs of neglect based on the mixture of sludge/water in the fuel tank. Day tank...
I have a couple 105s and at least one 101 that I might be parting with eventually, but too busy with work stuff right now...also not real close to OK...
Agree--I love the sound of a D198 or D298 running at load. They just purr even at full load or overloaded a little. I only have Libby or JR Hollingsworth in MEP-004A or 005A models--either way they're both champs!
Don't think I have any Fermonts except in the 80X series.
I would go with an MEP-003A. Lower purchase cost, simpler to operate and repair and extremely reliable. The 803A is a nice unit but since Puerto Rico they're selling for "stupid money". For either one of these, you would likely have to do some load management so you couldn't just run...
Another loss for GL?
This may be old news to SS members but new to me. Spoke to my GL contact at Eglin yesterday after noticing sparse listings at this location and at several others. Apparently GL has lost another contract and in the future will only be handling scrap sales. My assumption...
You took the words right out of my mouth--years ago I did some hot-rodding and whenever we rebuilt an engine, we used STP as a pre-lube and assembly lube. Put it generously on the rods and main bearings and journals, the cam lobes and lifters and also wiped a little in the cylinder bores. Did...
Douglas & all other SS friends,
I've been out of pocket myself and have not been able to do any MEP work for at least 3 weeks. Spending time on Pensacola Beach with family in from Camp Pendleton. Only problem---north winds blowing and 24 degrees overnight. Not good for going on the beach...
Frequency value is directly proportional to engine/generator speed. Increase engine speed, frequency increases; decrease engine speed, frequency drops. You should have 50hz at 1500 RPM; if the engine is "hunting" up and down at this speed, you should see frequency rise and fall in proportion...
A few things to consider or check:
1. Clogged fuel filters can affect fuel delivery and injection pump function. Have the primary & secondary filters been replaced recently? If so was the system properly bled? This also applies to the fuel strainer--has this been recently cleaned?
2...
Never saw a GL employee do anything by hand. What I have seen at Camp Shelby and a few other places is they'll ride on a mil truck with a slave cable and crank the generators over. The "fell-off-a-building" 803A at RAFB sold for $2801....complete with dog-eared fan blades and possibly a...
For unknown reasons, the units GP gets still have oil, fuel and coolant in them but the ones GL gets are generally 100% drained. Therefore GL can't really start one up, though I have noticed they'll sometimes report "units spins over but won't crank up" or something similar. I always cringe...
