To shim or not to shim

The short answer is shim if it needs it. And how do you know if it needs shims? You have to measure! Listening doesn't cut it. Pull the solenoid off the starter where you can engage the bendix by hand. Mount the starter. Engage the bendix into the ring gear and measure the space between...

Official 2015 Georgia Rally Radio Communications Thread

Wow... Get the tickets fellows! Speaking of testing... And since I'm the president of the Cullman Amateur Radio Club (CARC, how fitting!) this year, I feel obligated to throw out a shameless plug. Our radio club holds exams the second Thursday of every month. It is a rock solid testing...

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

You could possibly use the sync lamps that are on the units already. However, the sync lamps are wired to L1 and L2. So I think you would need to move X15F from T2 of the voltage reconnect board to T3 on both units and X22S from B2 to C2 on the load contactor on both units. Because L2 is now...

    Alaska to Alabama in Brutus

I know you will miss AK, but Dale County isn't bad as far as destinations go. I grew up down there in LA (Lower Alabama). Dothan to be exact, so I may be a bit biased. Say goodbye to snow and hello to humidity. Have a safe trip!

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

Unfortunately, some of these things were wired up where it works, but it may not be wired to the schematic. Especially if it had been "worked on" before. Some of the sensor wires will work in the 3 phase config no matter what leg they are attached to. Take the accessory outlet, for...

M923: What could these items be?

Thanks guys! The GPS locator may need to come off! :)

M923: What could these items be?

I was looking at a fellow member's M923 and it had some strange items on it. At least strange to me. Any clues? The first pic shows a key lock, drivers side right below the dash. Also, there is no familiar steering lock chain welded to the seat on this truck. It is a Red River refurb.

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

A couple of other pics from the event. Another nice M923 came in that belongs to a fellow SS member. Trying to find his username at the moment... Richard is cooling his heals here, but didn't stay that way long! The trucks drew a crowd and we spent most of the evening talking and...

M939a2 voltage gauge fluttering/ lights dimming issue

When I got my truck, the alternator was bad. It took me weeks to figure it out. The truck had no batteries, so I bought two big 1400 CCA batteries to put in there. The truck started if I just breathed on the start switch, so it took a while for the batteries to come off 28v. But as time went...

What does your M939 series truck weigh.

You are correct. The truck weighs 28,880 lbs. But I had to register it with a GVWR of 28,880 plus 5 tons. That is why 38,880 stuck in my head because I had to pay for a tag with the GVWR weight. Ouch! Sorry for the confusion!

What does your M939 series truck weigh.

1987 M934 full tool box, 50'ft 100 AMP cable, boarding ladder, and a half tank of fuel - 38,880 lbs. It can smell a hill coming...

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

And that would be correct! One leg of 208 wye is 120v single phase. Leg to leg is 208v single phase. Run into a 3 phase breaker panel and that how one would use it. However, you would have to pay close attention to how the loads are distributed across all three legs with a generator...

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

I have no idea what you would get! How about nice single phase conversion whether you are wrong or right? Because that is what I got. Color me completely happy! As explained before, I have a machine shop that has mostly three phase equipment. But no three phase power at the location! So I...

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

I have run my MEP-005 into a 30Kw load bank for 8 hours and more on single phase. I do have the resistors on the CT though. Sewerzuk, your conversion process and videos taught me a lot! And now I have a generators that are extremely flexible and reliable. (My residential grade Generac...

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

Hmm... I doubt that the transducer is causing the under frequency. It just isn't feeding back to anything other than the gauge. So it is most likely the speed switch. It might be that your idle is so low with the speed knob all of the way in that it trips the under freq. The idle on mine is...

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

The frequency is set by RPM. If one leg is @ 60Hz, then the others should be too. My bet is your Hz transducer is going pear shaped. Here is how to check: Open the operator panel with the genny producing power. Be careful! Check the terminals on the left side of the frequency transducer...

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

Hz is a function of RPM. Unless your genset fires up and the RPM goes sky high, then the gauge is wrong. As it turns out, the frequency gauge is the problem child of these gensets. Or rather the transducer driving it. Of the three MEP-005s I have had, I had to replace two of the frequency...

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

I think sewerzuk came out with an update on the wiring that was not in the original video. I believe that is where that came from, anyway. However, it does work. It worked with the original wiring scheme too, but I think the output was a bit less and sewerzuk found the better solution. How...

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

Here is a little procedure that I wrote up while converting my 005s. I wanted my 005s to be able to be quickly switched between single and three phase. Single phase for emergency home power and 3 phase to operate my M934 van body with. I use a toggle switch and 1 jumper to convert from three...

Anyone had their GL MV auction "contested" by the government?

Well... I'm playing the waiting game. Still no response from the gov about why it was contested and held at this point. GL says it may take 6 (or more) weeks to get an answer. I'll be patient and let it play out. I did get a call from the site manager. She said when she wrote the truck up...
