I also consolidated all my antenna parts. Not sure if I’m going to be using any of this stuff though. I’m sure there is a way to utilize the antenna for a radio signal like VHF or CB with some modification.

    M1008 Build

While cleaning up the shop this weekend I located and consolidated the parts for the troop seats and cargo cover. It’ll be quite a while before getting to this stuff so I stored it upstairs and out of the way.

Many hours in the blasting booth today.

Got some more work done on the front axle today. Separated the hubs and rotors and took a good look at the bearing cups. Wasn’t happy to see the inner bearing cups (driver in particular) damaged. I did note that the inner hub nut was much too tight as well, when I took them off. The wheels had...

    Receiver Hitch Mount

    B&W HDRH25122 is what I’m using.

Rebuilding after 15 years of storage

I used a grinder and pin punch to remove all of the exhaust hangers from the frame. Then I drilled out the spot welds on the hangers that pinch the rubber so that I can adequately prepare and preserve all of the pieces. I’ll paint the majority of the remaining pieces just prior to re-welding and...

Got a new input seal on the transmission and a gasket for the rear adapter to t-case joint today. The transmission input seal is called an “oil pump seal” sometimes because it’s on the forward end of the oil pump, but the more intuitive name to me is input seal. The gasket for the t-case joint...

    M1008 Build

I finally found a couple of old pics. I was exercising the suspension after I installed the lift on the M1009. That pic was in Pearl Harbor, HI. The M1009 was originally on the Barking Sands range on Kau ai. The M1008 was from upstate NY, originally purchased from Fort Drum.

Here are the pinion seal and the front output shaft seals that I used. Not sure exactly what the input shaft seal part number is because it was a spare that I had in my gaskets and seals drawer.

Alright, we’ll I got the inner axle seals installed and the carrier set up last night and the locker installed. Transfer case is buttoned up minus the 4wd light switch, which was smashed, so I’ll have to order a new one. I already validated that the switch wiring and light work on the dash when...

Squibbly's M1009 and other Questionable Projects

This might solve half of your problem. You can buy the cable assembly relatively easily. I know it isn’t perfect, and I’m not super happy with it, but it works. I tried epoxy repair and it just broke again so for me it was either find a used, brittle old piece or improvise.

ezgn: I'm sure that I'll end up going over the top and being unnecessarily meticulous with the engine. Now that I've put so much time into the frame and cab parts i find myself not even wanting to put a used fastener back in without hitting it with some degreaser and a wire wheel. I also know...

    M1008 Build

Finally got the transfer case rear sleeve bearing installed. Part numbers are as pictured. The National part 5208 came with the wrong sleeve so I ordered a factory GM part. The National part was about .020” too small on the OD, although it’s a bit tough to mic since they aren’t perfectly round...

    M1008 Build

At this point I’m not exactly sure. Option one is to reassemble the engine using existing parts with minimal investment but understanding that the engine will not last long due to some pitting on the cam, mild cylinder wall corrosion, moderate existing bearing wear, and three pitted lifter...

I don't want to get too far from the truck discussion here guys, but yes, the trusses are designed and approved by a professional engineer with a living space on the second story, yes the trusses are rated for 40 psf live load upstairs, no that is not roof loading, no there are no interior...

    M1008 Build

Well thank you for your service. I agree that this group is truly remarkable and such a great resource for us all. A gantry is certainly a valuable tool to have if you have the space for it. I would love to have a lift but couldn't justify the resale hit by putting one in to satisfy the .1%...

    M1008 Build

Hello Leo, I used the bottom chord of the trusses to support the cab weight that was distributed to the second floor using some 10 ft lengths of 1/4” 1.5”x3” c-channel via some 15k nylon ratchet straps with a basket sling strap attached to the door hinges and around the b pillar. I figured...

    M1008 Build

When the time comes I have warn series 18 and series 12 24 volt winches. Again not sure if I’m going to use a rear winch yet or not.

    M1008 Build

I wanted to show the roughly final look of the rear hitch assembly. This will still need to incorporate the wing supports and pintle supports of course, but here is what it currently looks like. Previous owner had started to work on a cross member above the rear axle to incorporate a rear winch...
