    Radios, aging, and corrosion

Good tip. Is there any cure for aluminum/magnesium corrosion that has already started? Something you can put on the corrosion to remove or at least stop it?

help me design a radio shelter

Hey Tim, Thanks for all the great tech info! However, some of that gear I haven't really thought of incorporating into this build. I see no need for VIC-1/3/4/5 communications in this rig, if this were a crew setup where there was a driver up front and someone in the back, maybe. But this is...

When Does a Truck get Overhauled?

Yes, they change the oil every 6 months. Replace it with used oil from another truck.

help me design a radio shelter

Went to Colemans Surplus on Friday, out in the 17 degree weather walking on crusty ice over 4" of loose snow. Very cold. Worth the trip though, in addition to some other things, I found these lonely panels that came out of a telegraph relay shelter there, that had been attacked by a...

recommend a source for brass stencils?

Looking for someone who can make brass stencils in small sizes (like 1" tall letters). Yes I know you can get sets of individual letters in brass all over the place. Looking for someone to make reusable brass stencils with entire lines or multiple lines. Imagine you had to stencil multiple...

    Mounts under front bumper

Are these the brackets you are referring to? If so, yes, they are towbar mounts.

Removing cover up paint from ammo crates

If you want them to look new and original, depends on how much work you want to do. But if you want to go all out, here's what would restore it. Pressure wash the entire crate. It will remove all markings, and make the wood look "new". Let dry. Then lightly sand the entire crate to fix any...

Removing cover up paint from ammo crates

Pressure wash would do it, but might take off the lettering underneath too. Same for sanding. Same for paint stripper. Any way you do it, I think those markings are lost.

2/8/14 - Breakfast in Eldersburg, Maryland

Oops - can't make it this time. Was on the road today for 7 hours and I'm beat. I don't want another huge trip tomorrow. Some day, gentlemen, someday.

Me too - it's been too long. Plus I can afford the gas now. Well, just about. :)

    New M38a1 for me

This happens a lot more than you think to our jeeps. We get something that looks good, and we think "it doesn't need much". Then the magnifying glass comes out and you find all sorts of Bubba-mods that were done over the years. This is especially common with CJs. Looks good as a resto-mod...

    Another roadside find

I hate that term rare - it gets used and thrown around more than a midget whore. Just because something is old doesn't make it rare. And if something is indeed rare, it still doesn't equate to more value. Thomas Jefferson's boogers are rare, not like anyone is going to pay a lot for them.

saving military communications gear at hamfests

I have this 6th sense as well - with OD green, black crinkle, and navy gray radio as well. I usually get to a show, walk quickly around everything, and if a "veteran" radio is on the table I usually do like a double-take and kind of jughandle on back to see what it was. Sometimes it's a false...

saving military communications gear at hamfests

Wanted to start a thread on this topic - going to hamfests and saving military-issue communications equipment and accessories. I'll admit, I am an unapologetic pack-rat when it comes to well-made radio gear, and when it comes to quality, nothing beats the ruggedness of mil gear. I often don't...

anyone have info on AN/VSC-3 teletype? manuals, etc?

Got a control box at the Richmond hamfest today, the data plate just says it's a control box for the AN/VSC-3 teletypewriter set. Info I have found online says that was installed in M-577 command tracks, uses MD-522 modem, AN/UGC-74 teletypes, etc. The control box I have is missing the meter...
